    Default Running GPS from Laptop?

I was in Office works today looking at the very small Asus laptop with 7" screen, weighing less than a Kilo, and they said I could use it as a GPS if I bought a GPS receiver and the maps.
If anyone here is running a GPS from their laptop can you please explain how you do it? I need details like Where to get maps?, what kind of receiver, make, model? Etc.
    Thanks.

Are the maps you have for OZ, and do they have POI and all the other stuff?
I suppose there are TomTom maps available too.
Do I just search for USB receiver on eBay?

The runs Linux. So much reduced software compatibility.

    has good info.

A is the addition you need. But Linux GPS software???

Think of the Eee PC as a PDA with a big screen and keyboard.

If it ran uSoft u cud run almost any GPS software. is generally the 4wd drive enthusiasts pick.

So maybe ask the Office how to do it.

    You can use a
    usb/bluetooth(good if is built in)
pcmcia gps (if it has slot)
or can use some kind of other gps that puts out NEMA data.

    farmsky,

the eee pc comes with linux installed and an xp driver disk. it runs xp fine. it is not a pda, it's a fully fledged laptop....

easy to install xp from a usb stick..

i am running one with xpsp3, 512 ram 4 gig solid state h.d.(for o.s.), 16 gig sd card for storage. also has wifi(atheros), 3 x usb2, 10/100 network, webcam, v92 modem, microphone, external monitor output, kensington lock, mic in and external speaker ports....

battery life up to 4 hours using wifi with a good signal, also runs zte 165 'join me' software just fine. I use it when i am travelling, with my zte 165 as a modem. you can use the phone while it is plugged into the car kit if you are in a fringe area, just unplug the cable from the car kit and plug in the data cable....

netstumbler works just fine as well, this would make a perfect wardriving/gps device......

weighs less than a kilo, don't even notice it in my work bag. perfect for travelling.

paid $375 for it in pantip plaza, bangkok, cheaper than a decent pda...

Thanks Hoe, Your getting a bit technical now. Are you saying that a GPS receiver WOULD work? Can you explain what GPS are you using?

any software/usb gps receiver that is compatible with xp will run on one of these.....

i will install the destinator pack and map fantm666 posted and try it out....

i have a compact flash/usb/serial gps unit that i use with my ipaq 4700 pda. this should work just fine with the software fantm666 posted.....

the gps unit works perfectly with all gps software i have tried on the pda, tom tom/destinator/miomap/igo/gps tuner etc. no reason it shouldnt work in usb mode....

Aiva is fine, one of the main moderators is an Aussie. i am on dialup so not a practical option for me! There is also a thread on Aus map which has a link to the latest available, one down side is the POI are a bit thin, i converted my TomTom ones into it and run fine. Also you can run it with reduced screen size or full screen.

The DestiPak is Destinator6, if you try the new one you will find it is very much better, i have been comparing them and the engine in Destinator7 runs alot better. It also intergrates with Centrafuse, my setup uses a 7inch screen running a MacMini runing XP as the PC side of things. The Mini has WiFI and Bluetooth Builtin etc.
