    Default AMD build

    HI guys

I am looking to upgrade my tied old pc, it is a HP Elitedesk 800 G1 /w 8gb ram and 256gb hdd, am using Linux as OS and will with the new one. I have been out of the loop for many years so not so sure on which AMD parts to choose, am not a gamer and not much high-end work too but would like it to be a good responsive bang for buck build.

I don’t know whether $600 is enough but a good motherboard would be a great start and then I could upgrade around it later, a fast nvme pci-e drive would be nice too

    cpu - AMD Ryzen 5
    mobo: – ?? not sure
    ram: 2x 4gb ddr4
    hdd: 512Gb nvme pci-e sdd
    case: – ?? not sure
    psu 500w 80 gold

All parts from one place would be good, thanks

I'm familiar with the HP Elitedesk 800 G1 ... I use a custom linux OS on them for the purposes of Amiga emulation, but they're not a bad 'previous generation' unit for lightweight desktop usage. (not bad as a lightweight gamer either from around a decade past, if you fit them out with the MXM GPU card and use the mSATA port for the boot drive....but I digress...)

Okay...the current loop with AMD, is deciding whether you go with AM4 or AM5 socket, the latter being the new standard as it were ; if you go for AM5 you're going to end up needing DDR5 ram ...but it's not as though socket AM4 is 'dead' by any means, just we all know that one day AMD will stop making them...so it kinda depends on how 'future proof' you want to be, if you ever walk down the upgrade path in years hence...

...I just upgraded this rig, the build likely ran to $800 DIY, but that includes an AIO water cooler for the CPU (but I had a PSU handy)...in Qld summers can get too hot for air-coolers

Cases have evolved ~ a place to put any internal optical drive is gone, so if you used the builtin CD/DVD drive in the 800/G1, start thinking about the need for an external (USB3) optical drive.

Getting everything from one shop, very much might be the more expensive route ~ now-a-days, you get the best prices from retailers that specialize in selling (lots of) cases, ram memory, storage media...

....cases I buy online from .... storage & other bits like PSU from ...

...I always buy CPU&Mobo bundles...if I know I've got my CPU cooling otherwise sorted, I will try to buy a 'tray' CPU (not boxed with cooler)/Modo bundle ...often times, ebay's worth a look... ...m'kay? That ticks your boxes above, add ram and PSU/case, good to go...(actually, I can get that for 17% off 'coz ebayplus =) ... and because I'm in SE Qld, I have a preferred local seller as well...

What I ended up with, is close to that bundle above...except, I could get tray Ryzen 5 5500 for $110 (nobody wants them 'coz no internal GPU unlike the 5600...but they'll handle faster ram =), and 2x8GB sticks of DDR4 is around the $65 for 'good stuff'...

...somewhere in this miasma, you could shoe it in on a $600 budget, you just have to sit down, and decide what you want, and figure out who has the best price 'on the day'....seriously, is this market they tend to revise their prices on an hourly/daily basis.
