    Default Coles Stops Selling Knives

Really? FFS....seems a bit drastic....I wonder if Woollies will follow suit...

Coles has reacted to a worker allegedly being stabbed by a 13-year-old boy inside one of its supermarkets with this nationwide move.

Coles will pull kitchen knives from the shelves across all Australian stores after a 63-year-old supermarket worker was allegedly stabbed by a 13-year-old while stacking shelves.

Mother-of-two Claudia Campomayor Watt, 63, was stocking the fridge at the back of the Coles supermarket in Yamanto Central in Ipswich shortly before 5.30pm on Monday when she was stabbed in the back with a large knife.

In the wake of the alleged attack, Coles announced on Wednesday that knives would be taken off their shelves nationwide due to increased levels of aggression and violence.

“Coles has made the decision to withdraw its range of kitchen knives from supermarkets across Australia,” a spokesperson said.

“Coles complies with all legislation regarding the sale of kitchen knives, and this withdrawal is being taken out of an abundance of caution as we conduct a review.

“The safety of our team members and customers is our No.1 priority across all aspects of our business.”

The sale of Smeg kitchen knives will still be available for redemption in Coles supermarkets at the service desk until Tuesday, January 21.

Police will allege the 13-year-old stabbed the 63-year-old woman with a knife from the supermarket.

It’s alleged the weapon was punctured through the woman’s back with such force that the blade emerged on the other side of her abdomen and was still embedded while she was transported to hospital.

Witnesses recounted the horrific scenes on Monday at the supermarket as the shopping centre was plunged into lockdown.

Say Sushi employee Dshering Dema heard screams and went inside the supermarket to see what was happening.

“(Ms Watt) was lying down and there was also some blood on her back,” she told the Courier-Mail.

..ahh, two-head city (Ipswich) leading the way with the moral/social distinction it's had for over a century now...

...I guess it's getting like that, stab wounds aren't much fun (don't ask me how I know =) ... I wonder if they'll still stock forks? Frying pans? Rolling pins?... like, in the wrong hands, there's plenty a lethal weapon to be had in your average supermarket these days....

....hangon, I seem to recall seeing knives for sale in your local AustPost shop?... =)

Well they had better get rid of all the crap they have on their shelves full of toxic chemicals and carcinogens as well, oh wait, that would mean they might as well shut down…

What are they gonna do when some little prick smashes a staff member over the head with a frozen chook?? Ridiculous. Or gets a barbeque lighter or matches from that section...

This is about as intelligent as hardware stores locking up some garden tools, but not others

I was in England back in July, and wanted to buy a metal knife of any description, to chop up me nanee to put on me morning instant porridge. I was able to buy a small fruit knife in a department store, but not until I showed ID. But... they don't take any details of your ID, just look at and say "OK, you can buy it" So, you gotta wonder, what is the point of checking your ID?

There'd be no shortage of items in supermarkets that could be used to inflict serious injuries.

You mean things like cans of baked beans & spaghetti? I reckon we could do some damage hitting someone in the head with them.

Just smash a glass bottle and use the broken end as a weapon. I can’t see a supermarket banning glass bottles in a hurry.

Meantime, the local amy disposal store sells knives specifically designed for killing (have flutes on the blade to allow air in to the wound etc).

    ....how about this one...

....gotta love the last line... "This incident serves as a reminder that even mundane errands can take a turn for the bizarre, and that coconuts, while delicious, shouldn't be used as weapons." ...

...lol...it's a bit "tell it to the monkey"... =)

Can't remember if it was Coles or another supermarket but I purchased a barbecue set a while back that included a knife with a 35cm blade. Very pointy and sharp, partly serrated. I was so intrigued by this that I instantly removed it from the set (there was also a smaller knife) and always keep it concealed but easy accessible under my office desk.

I seriously hope revealing it alone to a home invader will act as a deterrence when he approaches me with a smaller knife but if push comes to shove, I will have to shove, which will likely end me up in jail if the intruder is under 18 but at least me and my family may still be alive.

While this knife is a bit of an extreme example it is impossible to ban everything that could be used as a weapon. At least Bunnings would have to shut down.
Another great self defence 'weapon' is the electric pole chainsaw that can be comfortably utilised at a safe distance.
I also have a smaller and lighter one for my wife as she is an avid gardener but the 8" chain always needs to kept sharp to do the job. We usually store that one in the bedroom closet.

This is what my mind pictured... LOL

"According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Quevedo allegedly stole a man's tricycle, purchased for $260 on Amazon, before things turned violent."

"Deputies arriving to arrest him reported he purposefully became limp and used his body weight to resist being placed in the pedal car."
