Don't laugh, I've done exactly the same thing, lost all my gf's banking reciepts, insurance details, scans of important papers, xcel spreads of assets, shares, budget details, pics of her trip to africa & maurititus, could't figure why XP wouldn't install, did about 7 formats before I realized.
Get data back got the jpgs, but not much else.

Don't put an NTFS or Fat32 drive into windows small business server pc, it converts it to NFS.
    Don't fdisk your usb drive.
What happens if I press alt + F4?

    Done similar.
I have a 2 port kvm switch here at work plugged into my work pc and personal home pc. I decode DVDs to Xvid at work to take home and put on media center, so i flick between the 2 while working to see how the decoding is going. My work pc has had its cd rom removed by our it dept, so i use an extra long ide cable that reaches to my personal pc and just plug it into its drive.
When my Personal PC decided not to boot fully i just reloaded windows perfectly. ON THE WRONG PC.

    It are smart people.
    My solution may be yours.
Short the terminals with 240v and let your customer smell how their harddrive almost burned down your place.
They feel guilty, your off the hook

I would probably also do this, but luckily I don't backup to external USB drives because they're too slow IMO. I usually take the drive out and back it up to my dedicated backup server.

well I plugged my usb external HDD to back up Pictures word docs Etc
so i can reload them when the new OS is on the computer
All good so I stick in the XP boot disc and i see the HDD
is partitioned to C and D drives no problem o done it millions of times
but do you think I can get rid of the partition and just have one drive no bloody way tried over 10 different programs even the old 98 disc and the bloody D: drive wont go so i keep formatting running fdisk and nudda
looked inside box and there was no other HDD hiding inside the box what so ever

Can any one see what stupid thing I did LOL it has only taken me 3 bloody hours to find out see if you can guess
That's why I dont do that shit anymore on the side as its always the straight forward and easy ones that for some reason turn into a nightmare...pissed myself though.....

We have all f----d up in this game, really it’s a fine line backing up clients Data.
It can be nerve raking especially when you have already asked them what files they want backed up, AND then you receive that dreaded phone call half way through a format with that terrible voice saying, oh! I forgot to mention those files that we had saved in BLA BLA………………..
So to all techs’ Hats off cos, it isn’t easy

For full reinstalls (assuming it's over about 2 years old) I used to tell the customer it's a better option to put in a brand new disc and take out the old one and put it in an external drive caddy. That way they can copy their files off later and can find stuff they didn't think of. They usually go for it.

If they try to get you to leave the old one in I would try anything to get out of doing that. It will likely have or will soon have bad sectors and the PC will end up back in your workshop in a couple of months with a 'Missing NTLDR' error or similar.

Geez... I missed this at the time.

Thanks for dragging up the old thread, RCHP.

Fernbay... the first thing that came to my mind was wondering if bitchchecker and hamguy2 are related.
