Plug Smargo in to USB port windows will detect it and bring up found new hardware window, change the look in location to where you have the drivers stored and select the windows_Drivers folder click next windows should do the rest.If you have already gone past this point then go to Device Manager and use the update drivers option.

Yer cheers thought so but at the start it said install drivers then plug the smargo in lol confusion.

Anyway i have done that but when i do:
    2: Open smartreader.exe
3: Plug the smartreader into a usb port
4: Select Autoswitch or fixed mode
5: Select Normal or Dreambox kernel
6: Make sure it returns with "writing settings successful"

It doesnt returns with "writing settings successful", its just blank when i click apply.

    Any ideas?

when you plug Smargo in wait a few mins untill windows detects it and loads the drivers, is Smargo for PC or Dreambox? I used 1. auto and 2. Dreambox 3.T =0 you should only need to change option 2. to Dreambox if you are using on an dm800 and then set the clock speed in the Softcam, I had a few problems getting it going works good now and from what I have read it will detect the voltage automaticaly also and the card runs cool. After you write to smargo unpug and close the EXE program before plugging the Smargo into your PC USB for the COM port you want. If it still wont write try a different USB port stay with it you will get there I started to think mine was faulty turned out to be the operator that was faulty.

Is it possible to read an authentic aurora card from the slot already had this working before + the whitey in the smargo.

This is my CCam.cfg that my aurora card worked with:

Can anyone with a Smargo please describe the correct operation of the reader for me?
When plugged in to a USB power port the green LED light turns on, but on the reader I have the green LED turns off as soon as you slide a card into the slot. I can't seem to read any cards with the reader I have and was curious as to why the light goes off as soon as a card is inserted. I've opened it up and observed a metal contact at the end which switches when the card is fully inserted. After a card is inserted nothing will get it to turn back on until I disconnect the USB connection and plug it back in without a card inserted.
Is my reader working correctly or is it a dud?

Yer the green light is meant to turn off when you insert the card but after about 10 seconds it should start blinking. Have you connected it up to the computer and changed the settings with a confirmation message?
As described in the first post

Weird, it doesn't flash at all after the LED turns off (using a variety of different cards). Yes, I can change settings with a positive confirmation message.
So even without any software trying to access the card through the virtual com port it should still be blinking after 10 secs? Or is that only because some initialisation or communication activity is taking place?

Also, what are the T-mode and EGT options in the app for? The documentation is hopeless.

Just checked mine and nah after the first initialization the lights turn off completely.

You might have your CCcam settings wrong if thats what your using to read the card.

Not sure about the T-mode and EGT options in the app.

Ah, ok. So if no app is trying to ID the card then I can assume it's ok for it to stay off.
What about the other LED? Should it only light up during data transfer?

Only one led that lights up and only when reading the card.
    No lights otherwise.
Light starts flashing as soon as CCcam or NewCs boots with the correct config.

Using mine in Linux pc server.

    Default Smargo reader issue

    Hi Guys

Sorry to hijack this post, but i am having the same issue with the green light going out once the card as been inserted.
now i can get the card to read with my internal reader Ok. although there is some times a bit of freezing.(May need to play with the settings in Newcs.xml)

I am currently using a Dm800 with PLI Jade 3 image + Newcs and Mbox
I downloaded the plugin Usb to serial driver from the menu setup,
is there anthing else i need to edit/insert in the Newcs.xml to get it to read the smargo reader?

Any input on this matter would be appricieted

How to set smartreader operating mode using Windows

1: Install the windows drivers found here
    2: Open smartreader.exe
3: Plug the smartreader into a usb port
4: Select Autoswitch or fixed mode
5: Select Normal or Dreambox kernel
6: Make sure it returns with "writing settings successful"
    7: Done

DM7020 dreambox installation with PLI Iolite/Jade

1: Telnet to your dreambox run "ipkg update"
    2: Run "ipkg install kernel-module-ftdi-sio"
    3: Exit
4: Rename your original bootup file in /etc/init.d/ incase you have a problem*
5: Replace the bootup file in /etc/init.d/ with this one the bootup file is in the zipfile.
    6: Reboot
    7: Plug in the smartreader
8: Insert your card. Make sure the chip on the card faces the same direction as the lights on the reader.
    9: Done

    * The latest PLi Jade Final image appears to already have the usbtoserial configured in the bootup file. So no need to replace the bootup file.

DM800 dreambox installation with PLI Iolite/Jade
    1: Enter the download menu
    2: Search for USBtoSerial drivers
    3: Download
    4: Reboot
    5: Plug in the smartreader
6: Insert your card. Make sure the chip on the card faces the same direction as the lights on the reader.
    7: Done

    DM7020/cccam.cfg
    CCcam configuration sample:

    SERIAL READER : /dev/usb/tts/0 smartreader+
    SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/0 6860002
    SERVER LISTEN PORT : 20000
    WEBINFO LISTEN PORT : 21000
    WEBINFO USERNAME : username
    WEBINFO PASSWORD : password
    SHOW TIMING : yes

It is possible to add a usb hub to the DM7020. To incorporate a 4 port hub into the config insert the following:

    SERIAL READER : /dev/usb/tts/0 smartreader+
    SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/0 6860002
    SERIAL READER : /dev/usb/tts/1 smartreader+
    SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/1 6860002
    SERIAL READER : /dev/usb/tts/2 smartreader+
    SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/2 6860002
    SERIAL READER : /dev/usb/tts/3 smartreader+
    SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/3 6860002

    DM800/cccam.cfg
    CCcam configuration sample:

    SERIAL READER : /dev/ttyUSB0 smartreader+
    SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/ttyUSB0 6860002
    SERVER LISTEN PORT : 20000
    WEBINFO LISTEN PORT : 21000
    WEBINFO USERNAME : username
    WEBINFO PASSWORD : password
    SHOW TIMING : yes

The DM800 comes with 2 USB ports already. However if you wish to add a usb hub you can.

The above cfg's assume that the reader is set to autoswitch mode and dreambox kernel.

    You can choose any of the following frequencies: 3.20, 3.43, 3.69, 4.00, 4.36, 4.80, 5.34, 6.00, 6.86, 8.00, 9.61, 12.0 and 16.0

    Examples:
SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/0 6000002 runs the card at 6mhz.
SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/0 6860002 runs the card at 6.86mhz.
SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/0 8000002 runs the card at 8mhz.
SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/usb/tts/0 9610002 runs the card at 9.61mhz.

Most cards run at 6000002 or 6860002.

Ofcourse the reader can be used with other images such as Gemini etc. Feel free to experiment :-)
Thanks a lot man! It's workink perfectly. I just need to change the driver for ftdiport instead ftdibus and change de number of COM porte from 4 to 2.

    Thanks again.

I don't know exactly about it but it seems to do something with a smart cards protocol. Aparently Irdeto cards are T1 (sometimes reporting T14) protocol as I read somewhere. So the T parameter is probably important to get the card to communicate with the reader. I might be wrong thou.
    Cheers

EDIT: ok some more reliable info
    T=0 Character-level transmission protocol, defined in ISO/IEC 7816-3
    T=1 Block-level transmission protocol, defined in ISO/IEC 7816-3
