    Default NAS Devices

Looking at getting a NAS device, probably whack in a couple of 500gig drives and setup RAID1. Will be used for file backup, movies etc, need raid for the redundancy. Heard the Dlink device is OK, looking at spending as little as possible but willing to spend up to $300 for the NAS, then buy the HDD separately. Dont need anything special.....

    Cheers

You might want to have a look at the Media Gate 350HD - Not only does it do NAS it plays all sorts of media like Divx etc on your telly.

One tip if you do get one go to and download the latest NAS drivers and also check out the 350HD make web site as they do lots of firmware updates that fix codec etc issues.

Just be a bit careful with the Mediagate and similar units, the network speed can be a bit....."disappointing" when uploading, but fine for downloading/playing.

    Thanks Guys

Think it only allows 1 HDD. I also dont need a media device as my LCD TV has a wireless media gateway built into it, which works a treat.

    Cheers

    agreed

mediagate is quite slow when uploading files, streaming is fine though

    punxor

Guess the limitation of this would be older pc's would not support larger hard drives, ie mainboard limitation, otherwise it sound like a good option to me as I have a few spare older machines lying around collecting dust.

Does Freenas work fine wirelessly, ie using a pci wireless card as I have some distance between where I would setup the nas and the router etc.

    Cheers
