MTU? Download the free TCPOptimizer.exe (I think it works with Vista, I would have used it on my laptop) and check your MTU, it is probably 1500, try 1400 instead. With an MTU of 1500 the PCs at work don't update either.
I have a newish laptop that came with vista basic. I have not been able to download updates since 08/07. I acquired a copy of vista ultimate and installed it today (clean install not upgrade). I tried hitting the windows update tab and it searched for updates for a while then states error
8024402C
This is the same error i had before. I have set explorer to automatically detect settings as the error help panel suggests. still no luck.
I am conected to the inernet through a hard wired router and a modem. this is the only pc running vista. all my xp computers have no problems.
Has anyone solved this problem?

I found some info today that fixed another persons 8024402C problem...
1) BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Agent); Automatic Updates and Cryptographic Services *MUST* be enabled (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services). **You can turn them OFF and disable later if you so desire.
2) Go to "Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, Pop-Up Blocker, Settings...and made sure the following are added:
*.microsoft.com
*.download.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
3) Go to TCP-IP Properties, Advanced, DNS, and made sure all defaults are chosen. (Append Primary & Suffix radio button is checked, everything else is blank) This assumes you are receiving a DHCP address. Unplug & Plug your Network cable back out & in, so it gets a new DNS suffix with the DHCP address.
Point 3 fixed it for this person ie he had IP addresses in his DNS preferred and alternate settings area, when none updates worked.
See how you go.
