Default No joy with new BF unit

Well, after two days of trying to access my shiny new BF430 unit, I'm grovelling for hopefully, some help.
    Setup:
PC, greywolf(both versions), BF430 unit with supplied PS, Humax. All local. A typical, perfect so called scenario.

I distinctly remember reading somewhere that one of the gurus would fall over if this combi wouldn't work first up? Well, It didn't. I've trolled over and over every thread regarding BF units and GW with no joy. The default IP is suppose to be 192.168.168.125 Port 50000. I should be able to log directly into the BF within IE, or at least Hyperterminal. Not a chance. Yes, it's set on 232.
The BF doesn't show up at all when connected directly into the 2wire router. When connected to a PC via straight LAN cable I get an IP of 169.254.157.158 subnet 255.255.0.0. Do I need a crossover LAN cable when connecting directly adhoc style? I don't have one otherwise I would have tried it.
I've done this twice to the letter:

    1: disconnect power and network
    2: take top off
3: just to the left and under the daughter board there is a tiny switch
4: press switch in and hold while plugging power in
    5: hold for 20 seconds
6: wait 30 seconds and remove power then re power and plug network in
7: start ip search and locate the unit and change ip to desired ip
    8: smile and be happy
And also the Null modem cable trick and hyperterminal twice, still have no access to this damn thing.
After many attempts to reset this thing that wierd IP remains.
It's probably something blaringly obvious but stuffed if I can see it. If anyone can see any problem in my description, I'd appreciate any advice at this stage.
The only thing left I thought I could do is find a port scanner to find the port that the BF unit is configured to and access it via IP, port # and hyperterminal. Any suggestions? Hyper won't connect to the IP that's showing without a port addy.
The illuminated LED's showing when powered up are the two constant red LAN LED's, a constant red power LED and a constant green SMD led on the daughter board.

    you have installed it incorrectly.

it is me who claimed that he would fall off his chair.

get yourself a copy of vsport....that is the info you are missing.

don't change the firmware...make sure it is set to realcom mode...etc

regardless of the ip of anything...use the tool tab in vsport to search your subnet for any bf by manufacturers mac assignment quartile.

it will be as clear as crystal.

vsport must not be left on system tray when running greywolf.

I bet there is nothing wrong with the unit.

    too easy...

as z80- has stated it is not installed correctly

1: plug it into a spare port on your modem / router
2: install the application i have uploaded
3: turn off any firewall on your computer and start the program
    4: click refresh
5: it will find the bf unit now to the left change its ip to that of your lan

    Unfkucnibeliveable!

2 seconds is all it took to get it under control. I do remember now reading a cryptic post where it was said it wouldn't work out of the box.
Thanks fandtm666 and z80, I was about to get another one to try n sort the problem. Come to think of it, I might get another one anyway. It should be OK to make up a 12v supply for the unit from a spare PS molex connector? .(bow).(bow).. while leaving thread walking backwards....in awe of these two gurus..

instead of doing that mount it internally and grab the power for it from the humax's power supply

even if you dont mount it internally you could grab one of these from jaycar wire it up and then no external power needed

then make up a cable to your length you need

Thats a good idea. I might even knock up one of your internal seasons I saw here somewhere when I find some time.
    BTW,
Do you know if the season cards that came with madcows easy splitters are suitable for for GW? They have an RJ connection, so I'd have to make up a 9 pin to RJ converter. I have four of these cards here not doing anything ATM.

They are not true seasons they just relayed the commands to and from the splitter unit which did all the work. But cut down they make nice dummy cards

Yeah, it's a good refresher course.
Ya gotta love the way the mini season and BF unit is mounted inside the Humax, all internally powered and all you see on the back is a plug for a cat 5 cable that runs back to the router, eh? We've come a long way since gary's and sids.

Looks like none of my Humax's are compatible the way they stand atm. A learnerd member here has a modded working box for sale, I might have to buy his and sort mine later.

ok just opened it in explorer , there seems to be no communication via the serial connection.

1: is the mini the one i sent down ??
2: double check that the correct wire is soldered to the correct pin
3:make sure the dummy card is inserted into the card slot
4: double check the ip and port you put into greywolf
6: when you start greywolf and remove then reinsert the dummy card you will see the green led flash
7: when power on hummy is turned on the red led should light up on the mini

Is this just to open the card reader contacts? or does it serve another purpose?

    Yes it stays on

I'm wondering if the DM7407N chip that I've used has got anything to do with it?
This is the only 7407 chip that jaycar stocks, at the Erina store anyway.
Here's some logs of what's going on. I've replaced some data with x's to protect any sensitive data:

7407N i use from jaycar are ZS5807 , i just checked my spec sheets so it should not be the ic as they are the same

( though printed on my chips is SN7407N)

everything seems to be set right, and yes the dummy card stays in and keeps the contacts open making the unit think a card is inserted and then gets the data via the mini and bfunit.

1: when removing and reinserting the dummy do you get any response what so ever in greywolf ????

2: when doing that the green led should flash and also one off the network leds on the bf unit should also flash

    shouldn't need a 7407 in a season circuit at all....just the max232 chip...

probably needs pins 4,6,8 looped at pc end and a straight through cable with all pins wired.

    No response. ECM's & EMM's .....zero

    you got it.

I got 20 bytes of data through the season in a once off fluke. the card returned a coco response by the look of the data. Otherwise... squat.

I can't help thinking that fandtm's mini season is going to be the fix all of my prob's when it arrives.
I might build another one over the WE, wouldn't hurt. I'll post up a pic of my setup when my daughter gets the camera back. It's all self contained inside the hummie, power included.
Not sure if I've got the port forwarding correctly set in the Telstra 2Wire modem/router. It's very ambiguous. I'll have to do some catching up.
