Question Where to get a DVB-C card?

I am interested in getting my cable foxtel working with my MythTV setup without having to use the composite cables (using methods described on this forum and at . I have ordered the smart card reader but am stuck at the dvb-c card.

The two cards I have heard being talked about here are the SATELCO EasyWatch and the Technotrend C-1501 which both seem to have linux support but where did people buy these cards from? The only place I have found so far is but they charge an absolute fortune for postage to Australia.

    Cheers

I don't think you'll be able to find any dvb-c cards in Australia. You might find one on ebay without too high shipping cost though. I got mine from dvbshop myself. The tt c-1501 works nicely with foxtel (with the appropriate sasc-ng & newcs & phoenix setup).

What's the best resource for finding the best dvb-c card?
Is the linuxtv.org wiki and the linux-media mail list the best places?

I'd be interested in that, but I'm not convinced the 1501 is the best option.
I've had an in-depth account from someone who's using cinergy c hd with excellent results.
But it look like dvbshop don't sell it so looking for other euro retailers...

I have just brought in two 1501's from DVBShop - from all accounts they are the best option on MythTV.

I didn't notice your earlier post as I wasn't subscribed to this thread, only came across it again when doing some googling

Well "best" is a subjective term, there's other cards that are known to work well with Linux's DVB subsys:

What matters most is your exact set-up and whether they'll behave best in that environment.

Aside from Myth, what card server, reader, softcam, and protocols are you using?
Were you able to speak to someone who has the same set-up who could verify that their set-up works flawlessly with these cards?

As an example, the mystique cabex-2 is known to have good solid Linux support (although not yet doco'd on the wiki).
But it has an intermittent bug that is not pinned down yet, which seems to be brought on by faulty HDD's.

For me it's prolly the 1501, Cinergy C HD, or maybe Mystique, YTB 100% determined.

    Reader:
Smargo, Pheonix, or possibly something else, YTB 100% determined.

    Software config:
    stripped-down Ubuntu + Myth* + TVHeadend + XBMC...

    Cardserver: OSCAM
    Client: SASC-NG
    Protocol: newcamd

Should settle on card/reader in the next 24hr...
If you have some time, please share with us all how you go with your config.
I will be doing the same in this forum if I have good success.

    night.
*or maybe VDR; in which case I wouldn't use sasc-ng/newcamd.

LOL is that all it was, sounded like it had to be a local error!
Let us know how you go with your two 1501's, what did you get for a reader?

Not all are created equal you know, some are better suited for OC than others "if" you need to OC.
Depends on how many client you want off the card, and what sort of card you have for starters.
I assume you're on Foxtel given it's the only DVB-C service in Oz...

I don't suppose you could respond, as I have to you in other threads.

    Thank-you.

You really need to do some work on your people skills mate - I have noticed you have annoyed people in this forum in the past with your petulant rants.

I bought two of the 1501's.

why dont you start your own thread instead of hijacking someone elses ?

for example: this is r stuarts thread, and you have over half of the posts in here, that seems pretty ignorant to me.

LOL right mate, why is it ignorant?
Anything that's discussed relates entirely to what he's trying to do.
So if anything it would serve as further doco for direction/s to take.
It becomes useless to him the minute it becomes a flame-war...

WTF? I'm sorry, how was I rude to you?
Don't be so quick to cast aspersions.

I've done nothing but try to help in all my responses to your posts.
Why would you react in this way?

This is the question I was referring to a response on:

Depends on how many clients you want off the card, and what sort of card you have for starters.
I assume you're on Foxtel, there's only a few types of cards...

Seems that dvbshop are having a special on the TT 2300 hardware decoding DVB-C cards... I will most likely buy 2 to play with and happy for a group buy if anyone is interested....

A full featured card (hw decode) isn't neded, budget is the way to go.

Budget = any card without an on-board MPEG decoder.

It's "budget" because it's naturally a cheaper design, using your CPU for decoding.
But you'll often not want to decode the video, because you record it or stream it as MPEG anyway.

And even more important: The hardware MPEG decoder has it's limits, which may prevent you from
receiving HD channels or a full TS (that's all the channels on a frequency).

FFMPEG etc. + CPU's of the past 2/3yrs are more than powerful enough to handle MPEG decoding w/very little CPU utilisation.
