    LED's were wrong way around, they work fine now.

    But I still get the error, I checked all the little bits were in the right area, and they all seem to be, so I'll re-test with the multimeter, if that brings up nothing I'll start looking at conflicts.

    thanks for the help people, I'll let you know the outcome.

    Well I tested with the multimeter and got some irregular readings

    these are what their supposed to be
    IC2 between pin 7 & 14 = 5v
    IC3 between pin 7 & 14 = 5v
    IC1 pin 2 = 8.7v
    IC1 pin 6 = -7.8v
    D3 = 15.6v
    ZD1 = 13v

    now this is what I get
    IC2 between pin 7 & 14 = 2.55v
    IC3 between pin 7 & 14 = 4.88v
    IC1 pin 2 = 4.98v
    IC1 pin 6 = -7.18v
    D3 = 15.3v
    ZD1 = 12.8v

    Now I have checked all my solder's and they all look good, so I'm stumped!

    does anyone know were I should be looking?

    seems like something is dragging the power down. Did you use sockets for the IC's? If so pull them and measure the voltages again on IC2 and 3

    check that the correct resistors are in the right place what you have shown there is that they are mixed up, the only difference in appearance is the last band.

    A magnifying glass comes in hand for this job!

    leroy ??????? if you mean the pics are small ???? click on them and they open to full screen.If you mean checking them then yes i always recommend using a magnifying glass with light when doing any kind of soldering work

    No you silly for looking at the bands on resistors especially those metal file ones, soldering connections etc. looking for solder bridges. Magnifying glasses come in handy!!

    I double and triple checked everything, re soldered everything, and all the readings are the same, apart from IC3 I now get no Voltage at all!!!

    I'm thinking maybe something is faulty, should I take it back to Jaycar?

    and lets have a look
    When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

    Jaycar won't want to know about it as you may of caused the fault! Did you remove the chips and take voltage measurements? And as mentioned what voltage and current supply you using?

    its running straight of my computer's power supply, (unplugged my DVD burner to run it)

    I did remove the chips and I had no Voltage reading on both IC2 and IC3 when removed.

    I'll try and see if I can get a decant high res picture of the unit.

    and was the power led in the switch on? If not check the input voltage and output voltage on the regulator.

    Its a bit hard to see...

    Is the flat side of the LED towards the card socket ? i know this came up earlier but in the pic, it looks like they are away from the card socket (from the top)

    (these must be getting onto being the most viewed pics since Paris Hilton's noody shots)

    Oh yeah, and I know this is also probaly not it, but pin 7 on the 7404 near the card slot looks like it is out of the socket.
