Thumbs down MAME PC Minimum requirements?

I want to build a cheap MAME computer, and was wondering what would be the minimum specs needed to play a wide variety of games?

I want to play the games on a CRT television.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

I built one some time ago with a PIII 450mhz, it worked for all games that were released prior to about 93/94. So games like Street Fighter Champions edition worked well. The newer ones struggled a bit, it may very well have been a ram issue now I think of it.

I have played MAME games on a dos622 machine with a 486-66mhz cpu.

And made a boot floppy with Galaga,Xevious, frogger and spaceinvaders all on the one floppy...including all necessary boot files.

It needed Dos4GW ...(DOS for games writers?) memory manager from my recollection...

It's a little known fact that you can run the games from a dos prompt as long as your sound card is soundblaster compatible etc etc.

so there you go...doesn't need much cpu power at all....

I guess a USB stick would be the go nowadays...a bootable one...Hmmmmmm
