As Leroy said, just type "services" into the search field on your start button, scroll down to "print spooler" and click start.

I betcha the printer is set to DHCP and not a static IP...

(or not defined as a generic std ip)

"windows cannot connect to the printer" appears to be the first problem to overcome.....

    Hey Homer ,

are the drivers vista based? if not get some. i had the same problem with my lexmark and same with z80 had to add the printer port in manually and away she went. i also had to add the driver in manually - not by going through network places and clicking on the printer.

This is a very, very serious problem that has always existed in Vista and has been carried over to the Windows 7 Beta. You will find hundreds of people complaining about it on various forums.

Some people get out of it for a while with fixes like the one shown next but they don't work for most people. And it may come back if they try to install another printer.
It happens with many brands of printers and there is nothing wrong with any of them.

Apparently it is caused by bad printer drivers lingering around and the only hope is to delete them all and do a fresh operating system install. However MS does not provide an easy way to remove printer drivers, particularly in Windows 7. You are expected to root around in the registry and system directory deleting keys etc - which is risky and often causes crashes of windows explorer or whatever you are using to do it.

I have been trying to fix my system for months and am at the point now of formatting my C drive and returning to XP which was my last stable system.

This is a great shame because Windows 7 is wonderful if not for this bug.
