    mate ,
I would reopen and clean out the lube form the spindle and use something else to lube it .
What is sounds like is that the lube grease has started to harden up and you spinning it loosened it enough .
It should spin quite easily without much resisitance at all

i didnt remove the motor because i didnt have a hex small enough to remove it!

the worm drive for the laser was a little bit choked up, so i cleaned off the dry bits but the rest was still quite lubricated, so i left it as is.

time will time how long it will last!

    Yes,

Both are just as easy as each other to flash though...

    Default Dead Hitachi drive

Think im having the same issue but i took the cover off my Hitachi and turned on the xbox... i wanted to see if it was attempting to move or spin...

I wasn't seeing any laser activity, spinning or movement at all. It seams it is completely dead. Is it safe to say that the board is dead???

And if it is the board, would u still be able to take the Key off to transfer to a replacement drive??

Does the drive open and close the tray? Ive never seen a completely dead Hitachi, it may just be a faulty laser.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

no action from the tray no clicking like it is stuck.... if you notice when you hit the eject button, the green power light on the xbox NORMALY blinks untill the tray is fully open and or closed.

when i push the eject button the power light only blinks once and no movement at all from the tray.

It certainly may be a dead drive then. You would have to try and read the firmware off the board to see if its resonding, otherwise you would need to take the chip off the board and read it in a programmer. Not a job for the faint of heart.
