yes you can but you have too spoof the firmware, ie if you want too put a samsung in you have too read the firmware from the hitachi and inject it into the samsung so the xbox thinks its the same drive.

M8, just to clarify for you as you seem a little confused. To replace your drive you 1st need to extract the key from your existing drive which is matched to your xbox. A key from someone elses won't work.

So, buying a pre-modded one will be no good as it has to have your key from your existing drive injected into it.

So, you have a couple of options:

    1. Take your xbox to someone and have them replace your drive for you.
    2. Buy a replacement drive, (Search Ebay for a Samsung) and then do abit of reading on replacing 360 drives and give it a go yourself or,
    3. Buy the replacement drive and take it with your xbox to someone to change it over for you.

you can also buy another hitachi and swap the boards over, its 3 ribbon cables and a few screws.

That is assuming that the drive board is ok. The problem that is being described can be caused by a number of different issues.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

actually it may be easily fixed
    what error do you get
and you said it sounds like there is no spinning at all

    take the drive apart
take form underneath the drive get the spindle assembley out
lever off spindle , clean or the hardened lubricant off
    lubricate with something very lightly
put back together and see what happens
this will not take long and may save you the expense of a new drive

hmm ok thanks ozchips, ill try that!

it doesnt get an error, the dash doesnt think there is a disc in the drive, and the only option i get is to eject as it assumes its empty.

you never mate , you see the grease they use in hitachi drives dries out and thinckens and stops the spindle motor from spinning . Taking it apart and cleaning it is quick and if it works all the better

Good tip Oz, seems you are correct, but some are beyond lubing. Tried one 2nite & it spins up a bit now, but no cigar.....& now the other problem is how to extract the key when the disk dont spin(its V0078 & using FWToolbox u need to run a DVD or orig game to dump the f/w). The old DOS based i-xtreme BAT method dont work on V0078

yeah the only trouble with that fix is that if you keep on turning the box on for a long time and trying to get it to read it will burn out the dvd board , you need to get to it early
but it is only a fic if you cannot hear the drive spinning up and in my exp it only affects later model hitachi drives
