    Default House Networking help

Hi just need some help I'm going to be putting in some RG6 cable in the house in about 8 different spots and while i was doing this I might as well network the house as well, just a few questions should I do all the 4 rooms as my kids are only under 3 years old.

If I have about 8 ethernet plugs how do I hook it up at the moment I have a Billion 7300 modem

if you are at it i would be doing every room and also dropping a cat6 cable to each point that you are dropping the rg6 to as well and as such future proofing for iptv and alike .

the more connection you have is not really an issue as you can get reasonably cheap 24 port hubs about $80 and even get nice 24 port gigabit hubs but they are a little more expensive

cat 5e is fine , cat6 is a better cable in speed and quality and future proofs it longer than cat5e would.

IPTV is internet protocol tv such as tivo etc, and as things progress your set top units tvs etc will have and already do have network connections.

This also allows you to say install a network media player and be able to stream movies music etc to different points in the home

to hook up to a 24 port hub do I just use one of the ports from my Billion 7300 modem it has 4 ports, also the 24 ports hubs need power don't they?

adsl line to modem>>> cable from modem to port 1 on switch>>> cables from where ever to which ever other port you wish.

The adsl line is plugged into your modem and as such you then have a internet connection then plug your network cable into the back then the other end into the port number 1 on the switch

now any other items you plug into the switch are managed by the modem still as if the modem itself had 24 ports on the back of it

RG6 and Cat5e/6 running together are OK, you need to keep the power cables well away from them so it doesn't induce interference in the other cables

If you're serious about networking, and have the room in a garage/cupboard, you'd be better off terminating the data cales onto a patch panel, this lets you "patch" internt or other data feeds around the house

    This is my area.
For max speed and bandwith Fibre is the go, but the media converters for each end are expensive.
    Cat 5 per box (305m) about $90.00
Cat 6 per box about $150.00
PDL Lexcom Home cable $350.00 (300m) roll (highly recomended)
Better than Tyco's Cat 7e crap.
I recomend for max affordable bandwidth use PDL Lexcom Home Cable. Cat 8 copper, Available at all Electrical wholsalers part # LCHC300
The jacks for each end of the cable are about $10.00 ea Part# LCHRJ45 and are a fully shielded metal jack no tool required for termination.
The cable is 4 pairs, each pair fully Independantly foil wrapped, then the lot is Wire braded, Then Foil Wrapped again. Electrical induction is almost eliminated even in same conduits for long runs.
PDL also make a TV module for Their cable. ie. little box with ftype FTA Terrestrial input, modulated input for fuxtel. This unit patches tv thru your network cables also carrying the IR back to the Decoder/ vcr etc.
Brilliant setup and affordable for the average joe blow. I put it in my house about 2 years ago.
    Try
    My 2 cents

I make nothing / Only refering....

Ok the cat 6 seems a better option $350 is to much money for something that is not going to be used in all rooms right now and I'm sure something better down the track will come out and will be cheaper.

I don't have much room in my house so I will put the router in the roof unless that is a problem I just have to get a power point up there though, I need one anyway for the Antenna booster i think.

id stick with cat5e, cat6 is not going to be worth it.

you can buy about 100 jack for a few dollars

I think he means the wall plate jacks, still expensive @ $10 but nowhere near as cheap as the cable connections

hI I'm new here but just to let you know you need to have any cabling work done by anyone with an open or rescricted cabling License....

    I'm such a person...

it isn't that expensive to get a cabler in and have it done propperly....

can even provide purely labour and a cable at a per meter price and if you want to buy all the other parts

there are plenty of guys out there looking/ struggling for work and also who know all the rules to do with telecommunications installs and they also own all the tools and such ...
