Default Wii - What do I need to know

First off, I've been around computers a few years but have never owned a game console in my life.

My wife and I purchased Wii Fit for our daughter who lives away from home, for christmas and my wife, who participated in the game a few times, now loves the Wii.

So, If I buy one - probably 2nd hand and hopefully already chipped, what do I need to look out for -
are some forms of chipping worse than others?,
if a unit is chipped is it a forgone conclusion that all purchased games and those from more dubious sources will still all play?.
Does the unit have to be connected to the internet?
What is this HOMEBREW channel I hear about?

So many questions - things have come a long way since the C64
