    Default External Phoenix Reader Problem

I have recently been able to get a Phoenix card reader using a whitey on the serial port of my first DM500s. This was setup with Gemmini 3.6 NewCS1.31/CCcam2.04

After buying another DM500s I have tried to setup up the same config with Gemini 4.2 NewCS1.51/CCcam 2.05 with no success to read the card from the serial port.

I performed an image backup of the first DM500s and loaded that into the new DM500 and it still does not work.....

I have checked and rechecked the CCcam.cfg and newcs.xml config files and I am sure they are correct - (Hey I have used the same config files from the first DM500s that works anyway.)
The serial port must work be OK also as I have done the flashing/reloading on the new DM500 no problem.
I have also ensured that the "dont open serial port" is also ticked in the main setup menu.
BTW the internal card slot works no problem for a non whitey card.

I am not sure what else I can do now - Would really like to get the external reader going on this box.

Any ideas on what to do here?

dont open serial port should not be ticked, not have a tick.

you may have a mac address issue with both having the same mac address?

Thanks z80 - Still no go

I have unticked the "dont open serial port" and this has not been the fix. Note the DM500 that does work has this setting ticked. Worth trying anyway.

As far as the MAC address issue goes I have disconnected all other DMs so surely this should not be it. As a good measure I will assign it a new MAC address with the init file in the DM anyway.

are you using the same reader as the dm500 that works okay?

you can always back up the one that works and image it from the working one.

Why would you use that config with a whitey? It will not update each month.

Yes - I thought of this one too and have done so - Still no go

I know that the whitey update will not happen in this config however I am prepared to put the card back into my Humax once every month or so.
The main reason I want to use this config as I do not want to have a computer on all the time doing the server function.

Going back to my issue with the serial port Phoenix reader issue I am wondering if there might be a problem with some of the pin voltage levels between the working and non working box.
Has anyone had any experience with doing voltage checks to see if this might help to find out what is going wrong?

you have mentioned you are using newcs 1.51?

use 1.3 same as the other one.

there are extra parameters in 1.51 me thinks.

if that doesn't work then reimage both boxes with the working image.

the differences between the two boxes are too many.

there is nothing to gain in using the latest and greatest in this case.

Yep I have also tried using NewCS 1.3 and this is also a no go.

As far as the image backup of the working DM goes I was sure that is what I had done before I posted - But I will do this again anyway.

I say also that the working DM500 has the LNB in & out connectors above the RCA connectors where as the non working DM500 has LNB in & out connectors in line with the RCA connectors.

The working and non working DM500s came from different sources - I might do a box swap next week from where I got the latest ones from.
I am still happy with the non working boxes as it is only when I would want to use the serial port to read an external Phoenix card that is a pain.

Anyway this problem has engaged or challenged me
ATM to me it is more so pointing to a difference from a hardware perspective.

    Will post results hopefully tomorrow

It shouldn't make any differenece what hardware it is.

    Unless it is faulty......

OK I have made a backup image of the working DM500 and have loaded that on to the non working DM500 and it is still no go.

It sounds strange because I use the serial port to do the upload so you expect that the serial port is OK.

I am ready to walk away or give up on this problem now.

When I have more time I might download another version other than Gemini and see what happens with that - Suggestions anyone?

Also can I use another CS/Cam other than NewCS to interface to the serial/phoenix reader?

before you give up try this image i just tested it on 3 units and worked on all

make sure its the dreamup one and not the flashwizard otherwise the unit locks up because gemini use's maxvar

all credit to z80 for making this one

If it doesn't work on the link fandtm66 posted then you have a hardware issue.

just because the serial port works on flashing does NOT mean it is okay.

One of the signal lines may be inoperative and depending on the protocol used determines if the signal is required.

It may well be that your box is FAULTY.....

    Thanks z80 - Totally agree -

I am flashing with the suggested image right now.

I bought 3 DM500s recently and 2 of the 3 have the same symptom - (1 is still in its box)
If this latest image does not work it sounds like it could be a batch hardware issue from the supplier I purchased from.
It does not bother me too much as it is only if I want to connect an external reader that it will give me grief - Everything else works fine so far.

Thanks to you and fandtm666 for your fine support. Much appreciated.

If it doesn't work with an external phoenix then it will limit you considerably, i would not accept them...unless they were less than 80 bucks.

Hi Billy Goat - PM sent - I would rather not name the seller as this issue may be just me and my setup -
Note I am planning to swap a unit next week anyway if I do not sort this out before. Even if it is a hardware fault the seller is only importing them so it can not be his fault, hey he does not make them.
They came with a 12month warranty so it will not be a problem to get them exchanged if need be.

Just suggestion also check in your "Expert Setup" menu that u have ticked Don't open serial port.

also do you know that your phoniex working fine ? plus check clock speed and if its in phonies mode too.

Hope it helps you out d00d.
