    Default HD aspect ratio glitches?

I recently picked up a couple of HD STBs, mainly to check out some of the programs that are only available on the HD channels as I don't yet have a HDTV.

I've noticed that when watching 4:3 program it is often vertically letterboxed (black bars on the left and right) and sometimes it will be letterboxed on all four sides with the picture surrounded by a black border. This happens regardless of when the box is set to 4:3 fullscreen, 4:3 letterbox or 16:9. It happens when the box is set to SD connected via S-video and when it is set to 720p connected to a VGA monitor.

This happens with all 3 of the HD STBs I've tried so far which have all be DGTECs (DG-HD7710, DH2000A, 5000 plus). Is this an issue specific to DGTEC boxes or do they all do it?

My old Thomson SD STB doesn't have this problem. It's aspect ratio stays where is should be (fullscreen for 4:3 programs, letterbox for 16:9 programs).

not sure if it's related, but with my Digicrystal HDT-9300, it letterboxes 16:9 correctly onto my 4:3 tv, if a program I want to watch happens to be 4:3, I go to 4:3 fullscreen but I get vertical black bars on the side where there shouldn't be in 4:3 fullscreen mode.

It sounds like the same problem I'm having. At this point I don't think it's a problem with the box. It seems like the channels are assuming that if you have HD you have 16:9 and are hard coding it to 16:9.

My Teac HD-STB DV-B800 Shows correct Pan and Scan on 4:3 TV
for HD Channels. Guess it depends on chipset.

I guess it's the dodgy chipset/firmware used in DGTEC boxes (and others) that's the problem. Well, at least there's hope of finding a box that displays things correctly.

you could also look for a widescreen tv.
