Question BigPond wireless broadband - selling up?

My parents have had a NextG wireless broadband modem for the past year, they are now selling up and moving back to New Zealand.

So this renders it useless to them, so they want to sell it to someone else on eBay or something similar

My mum rang up BigPond to enquire about canceling their contract and selling it, where she was told that she can't do this. Surely this can't be the case? I know here there is quite a market for pre-used Woosh equipment (kinda the same thing). Also here, as long as you pay the fees (if applicable) there is no problem with canceling a phone on contract and selling it as unconnected.

Anyone had any experience with this before?

Just tell them to piss off. Do what you want.
I doubt they will chase you back to NZ
They will terminate the service themselves after the bill has been unpaid for a few months

my only real concern was that they'd end up paying someone elses bill.

guess the best thing to do is terminate the connection, then sell it? Their 12 month contract is up, so that shouldn't be an issue

the buyer should just be able to contact Telstra and just sign up right?

I like the idea of telling them to go jump but the only problem is they will continue to bill you and then suspend the account for non payment. After a few nasty letters, the debit will be given to or sold to a recovery agency such as Dun & Bradstreet who will try to recover the money. If your parents do not intend to return to Australia this may not be a problem but it will result in a black mark on their credit history here.

    1. their contract is finished.
    2. they are leaving the country.

If they were staying here, it's not the course of action I would recommend, but if they are leaving the country, then hell yeah. Tell telstra to go and jump

I don't think the in-laws would appreciate being left in it though

I think the following should work:
    - cancel the connection (contract is over 12 months)
    - sell on eBay or equivalant

I think the rep that talked to my mum was talking sh1t

No worries I have recently been trying to sort out a mess for a friend over a mobile that was on contract, which has gone the full way to collection agencies. It is a real pain trying to sort it out especially with the privacy act crap. Might be easier for them to move to NZ too.

interestingly the 'robot' on BigTurd site had this to say, which is what my mum got told too

I appreciate that you've purchased a Next G Modem off another person. Regrettably, we are unable to allocate existing Next G devices to new services. I do apologise.
when I asked why, it was stated

Each wireless broadband account requires a uniquely assigned wireless device and once that account is cancelled and closed the Next G device will no longer be able to be used with any other BigPond Wireless Broadband service, hence, only new devices from BigPond can be provisioned to an order to give you a wireless service...
    totally bizarre.

It makes total sense if you consider they give the modem as part of the contract. Having a BYO modem reduces there contractual hold on you.

Same sort of thinking that produced the 300 MB 24-month broadband contract. Oh your using more than 300 MB and don’t like the excess charges. We are sorry you are contracted for 24 months but you can pay more for one of our higher overpriced plans.

I had plenty of bidders some of whom I am sure would have done their homework re- reconnecting

They sure do, to connect them to the Next G network.

That's what I thought. So can't you just take out the simcard and reset the device to default? The new owner pops in their own simcard, inputs the APN and away they go?

That's how I thought they might work, and all user details are on the SIM.

Can the SIM card be removed from the device, or is it built in?
