Default PS3 Died.. any ideas as how to fix it?

My PS3 60gb model had died. It has red light flashing shortly after it turned on.

Is sending it back to Sony and paying them $300 to fix it would be the best idea? I tried to reset it and also removed the hard drive and put it back in but no joy.

Any clues? I have read somewhere it is a power supply.. are there any symptoms I should be paying attention to?

    Cheers

I havnt come across that one myself yet with any that have been brought in for repair. Sounds like it could be a Sony repair job to me.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

How do you mean "hard reseting" ... pressing power button for more than 5sec? or is there another way?

I listened to the console carefully and could it be that the fan in the power supply does not cool it well enough as it sounds suspiciously quiet.

When I searched the net, the condition I have is being described as the "Yellow Light of Death" as flashing amber light comes on just shortly before it turns off.

    Cheers

I took the drive out, it just shuts off after a few moments. It appears to me that the cooling fan inside is not working and the systems shuts itself to prevent overheating damage. It is just very very quiet. Since there is no way to diagnose the problem I had to send it back to Sony. Hopefully when they fix it, they will be able to tell me what was wrong.

I have tried to format and hard reset, the problem is that it shuts after a few minutes. It sounds very quiet and I suspect that the cooling fan is not working and the system shuts to prevent overheating damage. I have sent it back to sony and be keen to know what they say.
