    Default Windows COA

Just wondering about the legality of selling Windows COAs. Presumably if a case is sold with one attached, it is up to the buyer to do with it as he/she wants. You can also pick up cases with ones attached pretty cheaply at auctions. COAs are sometimes sold at markets, but Ebay doesn't seem to have them. Any thoughts? Cheers

last time i checked they were locked to the machine AND user, and are not transferrable. Leasing companies are supposed to remove the COA's from machines they get back from lease and are about to auction off. There was a period about 3-4 years ago when MS was sending out letters to everyone reminding them of this rule and on-selling COA's died down for a period.. but it seems to have picked up again more recently.

as a side note a friend of mine's system failed and had to replace cpu & mb.. went to re-activate windows and MS wouldn't let him.. saying that the change meant that it was a NEW system, even though it was in the original case.. after a very lengthy argument with them they ended up giving him the activation code..

MS, allow a certain amount of activations before they start asking questions. I personally have never had a problem with MS re-activation during a hardware upgrade. Your simple solution is to buy a licensed copy of the OS. If you feel that the cost is restrictive, Try Linux.
