    Default Restream to internet/LAN

    Hey All,

Been playing with with little success.

Tried setting this up on my WHS(also setup on XP SP3 box to instructions on above site), had to get php and iis running together. This worked ok, the page would load up ok.

For example I could change channel on the restream page and this would change it on the DM500s. After i click go (to watch) nothing would happen - just a blank screen.

Just wondering if someone else has had a similar issue and if they got around it.

This is via LAN, so really haven't bothered over the net.

I use the linux version and it works perfect, as I could never get it working on a wintel box at all. PM me and I will send you a link so you can see mine in action.

If you just have a blank screen without the words "no video" it means you have no bandwidth. Also there is an old thread about this on here somewhere (or maybe for the crash last year) ..

    Hey Jonc,

Yeah i do get the "no video" - this is on LAN. Wouldn't have thought it to be a bandwidth issue.

But your probably onto something using Linux, will try it.

    PM sent.

    Thanks

the magic word in my message above is without the words -no video-

If it just sits there and say no video it is either

    1. VLC is not running (click on the info button to see what error you have is)
    2. Not connected to the DM box
    3. The DM box is not an E1 box

Most likely a vlc issue as this is where I could not get it to work properly everytime on a wintel box

    Hey Jonc

I have a mate in Singapore that is keen to use a sling box however I was thinking that this re stream would be a better idea.

Have you ever compared the re stream with a sling box.

What typical bandwidth do you need on the re stream for a reasonable picture?

depends on what u want to do and how to want to compare them.
apples for apples the sling is better in size and containment as you do not need a PC to run it, restream is better is so many ways, more devices hung off it, selected streaming etc etc.

    I use both.

    Thanks Jonc

I have already been using a slingbox but as I only have a 512K speed available the performance of it has been "touch and go".

Given that 512K (or less pending what is happenning on the link / internet) is a limiting factor would the re-stream offer an advantage on performance?

by being able to take advantage of lower bandwidth streaming starting at 100k upwards, taking advantage of different screen sizes, by taking advantage of different frame rates, different encoding etc etc in short totally customisable to your bandwidth

Sounds like Re Stream will have some advantages and another project for me sometime.

I must say slingbox is a great simple unit but you do need a reasonable upstream speed to get reasonable performance out of it.
