    Default Dreambox learns frequencies?

is a Dreambox like a Strong where once it knows of a 'new'
transponder, it will update satellites.xml with it and use it again with a normal scan?

Or is it 'dumb' and will have to have that info manually added to the satellites.xml?

My hunch is #2, but just wanted to be sure.

depends where it learns about a new TP and what the software maker has implemented. It can learn from background scanning like PLi (but this is for channels not TP's), you can add a TP/Sat under satellite configuration and then there is a manual and automatic tune . BTW the satellites.xml holds the TP details not the channel details

    ok, thanks for that.

So when I see that a new transponder has been added to Optus D2 of (for example) 12675V 13320 3/4, I do a manual scan, then at a later time I do an automatic scan of that bird, it will scan those details if they weren't previously in the satellites.xml?

most likely not unless it is found on a NIT scan, or added under the manual transponder add/edit
