    Default DPDT switch wiring question

    Hi,

I'm not sure how to wire a DPDT switch and was hoping for some advice.

I would like to take the stereo output from my computer sound card and use the DPDT switch to direct the sound to either a set of computer speakers or my home stereo amplifier.

Was hoping somebody could help me with a diagram.

    Cheers

Consider a single pole switch. (SPDT)
The center pin is the common. One side is postion 1 and the other position 2.

On a DPDT it is duplicated twice. Two rows of three pins.
On 4PDT switches you will find four rows of the three pins.

    .
On a toggle or rocker switch yes - but not always the case on a slide switch

    Thanks Guys,

Given I'm after stereo output I think DPDT is the correct switch. I'm still not 100% sure how to wire it, but I will take on board the advice given and muck about with a couple of light bulbs to make sure I have the wiring correct before I proceed to connecting to my computer.

    Cheers

    G'Day Cobber,
    It's quite simple really.
You have Left and Right Stereo output with a common negative.(Often just the braid). Connect the L & R outputs to the centre terminals and corresponding L & R inputs to one pair of outer terminals and the other L & R inputs to the other end of the switch. You then join all the commons together.(and/or braids ).

yes watchdog, not all switches follow that arrangement, but it is the most common configuration.
