    Default Mercedes C220 1995 Hesitation

    Hi

My C220 seems to start fine but tend to hessitate when pressing the peddle all the way. I suspect it could be either the MAF & Fuel Filter. What are the sympton of these 2 being faulty or is there other scenarios?

    Thanks

Low fuel pump pressure= loss of power and hesitation.

Blocked fuel filter=loss of power and hesitation.

Airflow meters (Maf)=Hesitation and rough running.

Oxygen sensor= Flatspot, hesitation, running rich mixture, smells of fuel.

TPS (throttle position switch)= hesitation, flatspot.

Blocked injectors (bad spray pattern)= hesitation, flatspot.

Ignition system=hesitation, missfire (could feel like a flatspot), backfire.

To check your MAF sensor works start the car, while running disconnect it. The car should start running like a dog.
Take your MAF sensor off the car and wash/spray the probe inside the bore with CRC contact cleaner, they can get dirty and oily leading the car to run like crap because the sensor cannot get a good airflow measurement.

Edit; also check your hoses on the inlet manifold, incase you have a vacuum leak.

Thanks I will give the MAF cleaning a try. What do you use to remove the oil filter? It cyclinrical in shape & using a gripping device to twist & unscrew it I believe. When Can I use a code reader to read the error code??

    Oil filter removal?
1/ An oil filter wrench, i prefer the rings that slip over with a handle, as you apply pressure it locks on harder.

2/ If its stubborn and wont budge, get a really long screw driver and hammer it straight through the filter near its outer edge (furthest from the engine block). The screw driver is now a nice handle to turn the filter with.
Make sure you have a pan under the filter to catch the oil as the screw driver goes through.

Use your code reader when you believe you have a error....

Just remember the error codes can be miss leading. An example is a oxygen sensor error could be a problem that your Maf is causing.

Godzilla were you the person who offer to come over to have a look at my car to help diagnose my issue way way back?

By the way I tried briefly try remove the MAF connector whilst engine running seems no difference to engine running.

I may change the fuel filter over the weekend to see. Also the fuel is about to rum out, I am thinking to allow to engine to run out the olf fuel, may be the fuel is dirty & may clog the fuel injector?

Godzilla and global88 are the same idiots. LOL

So when you disconnected the Maf while the engine was running no difference?

Did you try driving it too just to make sure?

Try washing your probe first and test it again, it could be covered in crap.

Post a pic of your Maf some have a cover that can be cut open, the Jap ones are known to get dry solder joints inside where the terminals meet the board inside.

When removing a fuel filter id suggest disconnecting the battery, if anyone turns the power on you will have a real smelly mess on your hands.

The fuel tank is where most of the crap is, running a car down to empty tends to encourage dirt entering the fuel system.

If the electric fuel pump is in the tank, it will most likely have a gauze/mesh type filter covering the fuel pump inlet. These are known to clog up sometimes, chances are you will find heaps of crap lying in the bottom of the tank too

If you replace the fuel filter no dirt should enter your injectors, it will filter the fuel anyway, just make sure you work cleanly, taking care no dirt gets into the system while you do it.

    .
I did that once Zill & promptly peeled the filter open like a can opener. I prefer to use a screwdriver blade on the rolled flange where the metal is thick & tap it off with a hammer.

Hello its great to meet you again here. I will open the MAF later tommorow to take pic & clean with CRC.

Meanwhile I had taken this pics. Pls confirm that its the Fuel Filter CAP & I need a special grip wrench to remove, is it tuen clockwise or anti clockwise?

Finally this is the actuator adjestment, you see a plastic material which slides up & down, is that meant to be like that or is that broken?

Finally the orange tubing, that is also to fine tune the engine right?

I hope my image posting is correct below??

    Thanks

Its difficult for me to understand what you have photographed without seeing more of whats around it to get an idea of where your looking.

Do you have a new filter already?

Does it sit inside the case, or is it a screw on one?
If its screw on you can check the thread on the new one, if it sits inside a case it should be a standard normal thread.

I see 3 rubber vacuum ports, the center and the one to the right have vacuum lines running off them, is the one on the left a plug or has a hose come off and you have a vacuum leak?

I only see one picture posted twice.

That piece hanging in the last pic is a dust boot for the end of one of the cables (accelerator or auto kickdown).

Looks like the cable adjustment is on the end (due to cable streached), infact so far that the boot cant slip onto the end of the cable.

Dont worry about it till you need to change it. (no adjustment left)
