My neighbour is after either a cd player or a device on its own that has a usb connector (to play mp3) with audio outputs (so he can connect it to his hi fi system)

Nope, no good. He said he'd have to charge the ipod all the time. He's looking at the latest Pioneer DVD player which has a USB port.
