UK, unlock your phone for 10 pounds?

Hi everyone, recently i was in the uk and all around was stalls offering to unlock your mobile phone from any carrier for only a tenner, couldnt see what software it was that they used, but i think i did see him pop his own sim in, but that may have been just to test, anyone know what its all about? There was lots of places doing this, no one seems to do it here. Looking forward to responses.

alright smarty, havent seen anything of it in sydney as open as it was in uk, interested in finidng this software that seems generic.

do u know what u r looking for ??
every brand has its own software
most of the new models have to be done via protected unlocking gears worth $$$
