Default satellite foxtel in a unit

    Hi

I'm new to this forum, I just discovered it when searching for some info.

I hope someone can help with my problem. I'm moving into a unit that isn't connected to foxtel and the body corporate don't want to get it hooked up.

I'm a customer right now and don't mind paying, my question is. Can i set a satellite up on my balcony ( it's North facing ) and get foxtel hooked up at a friends place and use the box and card? And does it have to be satellite foxtel that gets hooked up or can it be cable. I live in Sydney which I guess is pretty much all cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

If you are put up a dish then it has to be a satellite box, not a cable box as they are not the same.
If your balcony is facing north then it would be easy to put up a dish.
To get a reasonable guide to where the dish should point go to

    type in your address
    select optus c1
scroll down and you should see what the elevation
and what degrees the dish should be.

If the body corp are so bloody minded that they won't install cable then they might have something to say about a dish hanging off the balcony.

Just use one you can setup on a stand and keep it back from the edge as much as possible. You will need to find out if that is a possibility first though

You will have to have an STB that is suitable for satellite as cable is totally different, F*X*EL will provide this if you transfer your service.

North facing is 99% of the battle, You can buy a tripod that will support a dish, as is used mostly by Grey Nomads for their caravan TV.

Align it either on your balcony or inside facing through a window, and use the signal bars on your STB to tweek the signal.

You can easily move it out of the way through the day if not watching.

I'm planning on setting it up away from the edge. I work in maintenance so welding up brackets and supports is no problem.

foxtel just seem so reluctant to help with any other option than wiring up the whole block, greed i suppose.

I might try approaching them and telling them I'm going caravaning and seeing if they will provide a STB that way, as i still haven't found anyone who lives in a satellite area to get it installed at thier place.

Thanks for the replies so far!

It seemed a bit too easy, is the only way to get a satellite box and card by getting it set up in someone elses place?

If you can find a friend or someone who wants to have Fox**l, have them get 2 boxes installed and share the costs.

That way you both get Fox**l, plus the second box, and at half price.

That's what i originally planned to do, I just saw the caravan thing and thought " problem solved, I'll just say I'm going to do a bit of caravaning and need my current subscription transferred to satellite!"

If only it was that easy. I'll have to ask around at work tommorrow, I'll probably end up having to pay the lot. But I'm willing to do it, council tele is that bad!!

Have you thought about Select TV as an option

they have some of the channels foxtel have,

The question is are they the channels you want ?

the best part is you can do a self install, & buy the Select equipment you need

you can just get the subscription card if you have your own equipment,

or you can buy a package of set top box & sub card together,

& not have to lie to foxtel, or get a friend to get you the Foxtel equipment

    just a thought

I thought about select tv but some of the channels I watch the most aren't in thier package.

It is definately an option if the foxtel thing doesn't work out.

If you find you can't get a satellite install, only a cable install, you can buy a dreambox sat receiver which will accept the card

Even though they're shown on the Selectv program menu, the FTA channels 2-7-9 & 10 are not retransmitted by select.

If they were I would sign up like a shot.

Thanks to everyone who's posted replies, you guys know your stuff!

I got so caught up with the north facing part and which box to use that I didn't even notice there is a tree in the way. I haven't moved in yet but when I went on to the satellite finder website I noticed my new balcony points exactly where I want it to but there is a tree right in front of it.

From other posts and from common sense this tells me that this will be a problem. I'm now waiting for a reply from the strata on putting a dish on the roof.

I'm thinking of going with an 85cm dish now as I think somewhere down the line I might want to start experimenting with other satellites. But for now are the only options if all I want is F*x with a legit sub card?
    1. To get sat installed at a friends house and use the extra box and card, or
    2. To get a cable card and a dream box

    Hi,

I am having this exact same problem!

I currently have Foxtel Satellite and am moving into a unit that is in a cabled area-however the body corporate won't pay for the cabling (which is fair enough).

Even though they could, Foxtel refuse to set me up with satellite because I am in a cabled area.

They are now forcing me to cancel my contract and pay out the remainder.

Can I buy my own box and satellite and just put in the Foxtel card?

If so, what do I tell Foxtel as they have already cancelled my card and are coming to pickup the box on Saturday?

    Any help is appreciated!

    G'Day Cobber,
It's a crying shame that you did not seek advice here instead of the Wolf itself.
    Damage repair.
Ring them and tell them that you're not moving after all and to reinstate your card. They cannot refuse as they are going to charge you regardless.

Then, just get advice on the best setup from the guys here.
When you're ready, just take your box and card to the new abode without telling them.
Kindest Regards, " The Druid ".

I think I would be ringing Foxtel and demand they install a dish as there is no law or regulation that prevents a customer using a dish in the cabled area.
Also I would ring Consumer affairs and talk to them about Foxtels refusal to continue your connection and their demand for a disconnection fee when you dont want too.
Ring Consumer affairs first tho to see what they say.

Get up them (Foxtel) as you have nothing to loose.

    You're right dammitt!

They are such a bunch of pricks to deal with...and incompetent! 4 people gave me 4 different answers as well as contradicting themselves!

If I could get UFC any other way I would!

Any idea how much a new setup will be?

    Worst case scenario, $400.
    Best case, $Zero.
