    Default D-Link router problem

I'm running a DI-524UP router that my laptops can connect to no worries, however another desktop I have is having troubles with a D-Link DWL-G510 wireless card.

What it does is only access the internet for about 5 minutes out of every 10. it will be working fine, then for about 5 mins or so it just completely loses conectivity with the net, then just as mysterioulsy, it finds it again and runs fine for about 5 mins.

I have no other wireless gear running to conflict with it, I live in the bush so chances of stray signals interfering are slim to none, the PC is less than 2m from the router and it is running xp pro sp2. I use Nod32 2.7 and windows firewall on it, same happens with both are off.

its doing my head in (mainly cos the mrs has to use my PC lol)

Try dropping the speed back on the router.

When it drops out look at your laptop at the same time.
If your laptop also has no signal throw the dlink in the
bin, this is a well known problem with dlinks and wireless.

    problem 1.
    dlink
    possible other problems.
have you got any other cordless phones or other equipment that operates on the 2.4ghz spectrum?
is your net dropping out? or is it the wireless ie. does it drop out on more than one computer?
try changing the channel around on the router and see if that helps.

    gl and report back.

even those video signal senders operate at 2.4Ghz and will interfere with wireless.

    How'd you go?

I have one of those POOH routers and have the exact same problem! I did find turning off DHCP and setting static IP's on all pc's seems to have reduced the problem, but seeing that it happened so randomly it's kind of hard to tell

Are you using the Dlink utility to connect to the router? This util is rubbish.

Just use the standard XP built-in connection method.

Upgrade the router to the latest firmware and ensure wifi card drivers are up to date.

If you have NAT running on your modem and router this can also cause strange issues.

MS got so fed up with Dlinks lousy drivers causing problems that they wrote a version themselves. This driver updates the a3ab.sys part of the driver which was the cause of lots of instability problems.
