Not software, but hardware. Snapgear all the way but it is pricey. (had a spare one at work that im trialing for a long time)
Getting a bit paranoid in my old days LOL
So what's the best software that you other "Super Paranoid Geeks" are using for protection these days
cheers

So would my new Billion router do a good enough job you think ???
cheers

your billion will be fine, just take all the precautions lock it down create rules for each app or service you want to run. Run services on non standard ports eg don't leave remote desktop on 3389. When l33t haxors port scan they usually a scanning a bunch of common used ports to save time. Set the firewall to not respond to ping (still doesn’t fool nmap) and ports to remain stealth.
If it's non critical service (and your tinfoil is getting nervous) you can always turn off your router
Cheers

Kaspersky Internet Security.
When you have set up your firewall, go here to test it.
What happens if I press alt + F4?
i'll get caned for this, but zone alarm pro suite, although not uber regarded anymore (it used to be the default uber software firewall) is good. tested it with rob916's link and tested secure... although it reported I can get messenger spam, when I tested this did not receive any.... have not had any trouble with it in years (once its setup properly)
If you feed ducks at a pond, chances are your bound to feed a goose or two without even knowing it.
Happy to help.

Hi M8,
I use Commodo firewall version 2.4.18.184
It is free and has won some awards.
I have been using it for yaers now, without a problem.
Very light on XP as well does not slow you down.
Make sure you use version 2.4.18.184
Cheers

For a software-based home PC, I would go with Sanity and suggest Kaspersky Internet Security. If you are using a router with a firewall it might be worth having a look at this provided your router can forward logs then Wallwather will display all traffic in and out of your connection on any router port.
Some rootkits and other crap can hide the presence of running process from the OS user interface. Monitoring the router traffic lets you see all the traffic like if something is looking at a HTTPS or IRC session for command and control as some trojans do.
