    Default Wireless router recommendations needed.

Well the D-Link 4 port wireless router fell over on saturday night sometime, no worries I thought, I'll fire up the netgear (spare), well it didn't even boot and doesn't look like it ever will. They are both "cactus".

So I'm after a recommendation for a wireless router/AP, what do you use and have you had any grief? I'm thinking Linksys/Cisco this time.

    Hi Globe,

Any of the major brands with

    802.11n wireless networking,
    Gigabit ethernet wired networking,
    VOIP with PSTN failover,

The closest would be the Billion BiPAC 7402NX(has two of the three)

Globe, what model is the DLink, is it a G604T ?

    Cheers

@ Woodstock: Is that the Linux one that can be flashed for extra power? it's on HT's website for $109.

@ machine: Tooooo many options lol, although VOIP would be useful. I can't remember the DLink Model number, I will post back here tonight with it. It's not a D604T.

    Hi Globe,

Well you don't want to buy an old 802.11g net work router/modem

802.11n is the way to go. 5 times power of old g.

Yeah I know where you're coming from, but the laptop has a few more years service in it yet, and it's a Centrino (v1) so no need for the "n" just yet.

Is the "n" even standardised yet?

Linksys or if you want cheap but good TP Link.

I use a Linksys WRV200 which has VPN built in but that an old model now. I recently installed a TP Link and a couple of there cards and they work well.

I dont like Belkin as there interface does not allow you to access a lot of the more advanced settings.

G not able to be received upstairs in far bedroom, I can get n in the next door neighbours loungeroom, as well a great reception in the far bedroom through three birck walls.

There's one reason to go n

ya don't have to be transferring big files to need n, Just the advantage of being able to receive where previously you could not receive a tiny file is an advantage

Linksys WRT-54G flashed with dd-wrt firmware is a great router...although it's a stand alone router no adsl modem or voip....but you won't find a better performing router once running dd-wrt firmware. You'll have to buy used to get the good ones...new models have less flash memory..
