how far can a lan cable work over, cat5?
on 1.5mb adsl, i know in the house 10+ metre is ok but wat happens over say 20-30 mtr.

and, are those crimping tools easy enough to make your own, or best to buy a pre made cable.
easy enough to make your own , cat 6 is better if your looking at future proofing

cat6 is better and yes making cables and doing termination is easy if you have the right tools, you can get them cheap on ebay if you are only going to use them once and awhile, you will need a crimper and a punchdown tool, and some sort of cable tester .

Cat 5e is good for 100M runs. After that it's not so reliable. Cat 6 is no better than 5e. It was supposed to be better and good for 1Tbps but so is 5e That's why it hasn't really taken off.

actaully if your going by AS3080:2003 100m is the Max length from one device say a server via a patch panel and Permanent link and fly leads either end
after that you shoud just get a Fiber run installed
umm no.. for most uses cat5e is fine for GigE up to 50m which covers 99% of all installs if you wanted to ensure you had GiGE further then that but up to 90m then Cat6 would be used....
all the data cablers i know install cat6 for lenghts over 50m's and bill the client for that or they just run fiber
the cable standard that hasn't taken off is Cat7 as not many "cheap" 10Gb/s pci card/ switches are on the market

Cat5e will do 100m, after that it falls over.
BUT, all you need is another HUB/SWITCH at the end of the 100m and you can go ANOTHER 100m and so on and so on.
That is how i wired a Resort 9 years ago.... i guess you would just use fibre now
tho if the OP is talking about saya "patch lead" then the max length should only be 15m...
patch lead being made of strandard cable and a "installed" cable being solid core

got 35 m running into neighbors house .. all good ! ..share Internet with them ..does alot big transfer GB's .. sit on 7 mb/sec

by memory when i did CCNA max cat5 run = 100 metres
(100Base-t IEEE 802.3u)
100Base-T4 Category3 or 4 = 100Metres (4 pair)
100Base-TX Category5 = 100Metres (2 pair)
100Base-FX Multimode fibre = 2Km , single mode 10Km
(100VG IEEE 802.12)
Category 3 , 4 or 5 (4 pair) = 100Metres
Multimode fibre = 2Km
You also have Category 5 Levels 5 ,6 & 7 which surpass Category5
There is also Cat5e & Cat6
While these newer categories may now enhance the lenght they go some way in helping the signal - meaning you can move data faster over the same distance
A patch lead or a fixed cable, assuming cat5, can still have a maximum run distance of 100 metres. After this you need to amplify the signal again as oceanboy and mal have mentioned they have done by segmenting the network through a switchrouter etc, or you can change to a different type of "long Run Ethernet" technology which requires special hardware at each end, but will allow you to run at much greater distances, up to as far as 1.5km.

Everything is distance and depends how far you need to go.
Many suggested fibre if its a long run but $$ wise I Linked The Weighbridge at north bourke cotton gin with cornerstone community group Bourke using 4 pair existing telephone cable (.64) over the 12kms and still get 5meg.
That was a while ago and as far as i know its still up and going.
