I think Pick A Part charge extra to cover all those little extra's we grab while getting the real part LOL
After going to wreakers for years for parts, ive found the ones where you pick and remove your own parts much cheaper and the way to go for the last decade or so.
Lately things have changed.
Prices are now much higher than normal wreakers, ive now given up on the self serve wreakers.
An example from the other day.
Ford diff....200 at pick a part, another $40-50 for warranty. I have to bring tools and remove it myself.
Same part at wreakers, $140 to $150 depending on where you go with a 3 month warranty.
You dont have to kill yourself getting dirty and doing all the work, the parts ready, pay and load it into your car and drive away...how easy.
Pathetic, i thought they were supposed to be much cheaper not needing grease monkeys to pull parts off for you.
Maybe its the public liability insurance thats biting them.
Looks like i was wrong for years.

When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
wouldnt say youve been wrong for years mate. Its only started changing over the last few years.
At least if you get it off yourself you get to see the state of the vehicle that its coming of and as B4L said you canpocket all the nuts and bolts and stuff "just incase".
LOL you could be right, but where i go they check your tool boxes when paying.
If your good and point out the extras when paying they overlook some little bits.
Years ago they would just ask you to throw some change into the charity tin, and you would be more than happy to.
Today the charity tins gone and the prices have gone through the roof.
Maybe they got sick of working for charity.
Too right, why buy a whole unit when you just need a small part that fits neatly in a pocket or toolbox to make my own unit good again.
I have never been to pick a part but Harveys DIY and the one in Greens road Dandy are not too bad.
Only good for older cars thou.
I like getting a bolts, clips and small stuff like that too.
We have U-pull it and it cost you a dollar to get though the gate lol so if you don't find the part you need you still pay. I saw one guy walk out with 6 alternators in his tool box lol. when i go there i always fill my pockets with clips and bolts and such just to make it worth while.

AHH You big bunch of crooks LOL

When i went to the wreaker, the person serving me took me into the back to pick one.
$140 for a stock single spinner, if i wanted a LSD it was $240 and very hard to find as the XR6's and 8's had them, hardly any on station wagons.
They couldnt find a staion wagon diff (leaf spring) to suit, they did have some later ones with ABS but i couldnt be bothered converting them.
I didnt want to spend the extra for the LSD, but the last diff they found in the corner was what i was after they told me.
Took a quick look at it and asked if it was $140...yep...didnt tell them they overlooked that it was a rare XR6/XR8 station wagon LSD diff.
See even the pros make mistakes.
Now maybe the kid (read little shit) will stop blowing them up. LOL
LOL, yeah re read it...bad...really bad. LOL
I find there still cheaper, but it all depends on what you drive.
Falcons/Commodores seem to be rising in price as people are starting to keep the older models, so when they need to fix it there are heaps at the wreckers! but the parts are more expensive!
Jap cars are still cheap as chips! unless it's a rare car, my mate just picked up an RT40 Corona from a wreckers for $500, got a 4AGE bigport for $300, a T50 AE71 5 speed for $225, and a T18 diff for $100,
with a welder and some mechanical knowledge he could have all this together for under $2,500 now if you ask me thats a bargain! if you can drive a RT40 Corona with power and reliability for under $3k you doing well!

Thanks for that list Hillbilly, handy to have.
Sent a message off to pick a part and let them know how far off from market value they are this morning.
Still no email reply from them.
Ive tried both the pick a parts and the one on Center Rd Chingvale, both seem higher in price than standard wreckers in my opinion.
Next time ill try the others and see how i go.
Kilsyth Parts recovery are pretty cheap for anything other than ford stuff, as they are a Ford specialist mainly.
I got a 32/36 Webber Carby for $20!!! and they sell 4age's cheap when they get them
We have a group here in SA called "YOU PULL IT" they also started of cheap. Done the big advertising thing, got popular, put prices up and now rely on people assuming(and not checking) they are cheaper because they use your labor to remove the part.
If I want too,I can, I will
I just picked up a VX 4-speed Auto box, only done 60,000kms, for $160.
Other wreckers in my area want $400 + trade-in or $1250 trade-in for reco box.
Bought the box for $160 + $25 for tranny service kit. Works like a dream.
