I think you with find the authentication request is gererated by the proxy server which might be an ISA server for example. In anycase it would be a proxy server application running on windows server or unix.
This is a pretty good free option which runs on most forms of Windows an allows authentication per user or group - That might require a domain I am not sure without reading all the docs

by using the "net use"
command you can specify the user credentials, and override the cached
username/password.
for example at the command prompt:
net use x: \\server1.domain\share1 /userDOMAIN\username
you will prompted for a password and it will map your local x: drive
to the remote share. thereafter, any requests for shares on that
server will use the defined credentials that you specified in the net
use command.

You could also try this
try this from the server/workstation that has the issue.
Open Internet Explorer
Select the Tools > Internet Options > Security > Intranet
Click the Intranet > Custom Level icon
Scroll down to the User Authentication section
Select the "Prompt for username and password" option
The next time you try to access an Internet site, you will be prompted for your username and password

You don't need window server to get username or password to prompt if that is what you want to do.
Do into your normal windows OS and create a username/password - Control Panel -> user accounts and enable security settings.
That all you need to secure your own desktop computer at home and remember to restart your computer.
Do make sure you remember your password or your not going to have access to your own computer.
Make sure Guest is enable, so you have a back door back into your computer.
