    Default Authoring for HD

Until Bluray burners and media are a lot cheaper than now i will persist with good ol cheap DVD's, now that i have a 46" HD lcd tv, what is the best way to re author (and programs to use) to get the most out of the media files i have. I most use divx/xvid avi files which look pretty good when recorded to dvd using AVS but wondering can i do better and possibly switching to dual layer discs ?
