When you finally get your Mpeg-4 TV don't forget the DVB group are working on
3dtv currently which will benefit from Mpeg4
So buy a H264 STB when they are cheap and hang in there.
Wait to they sought out 3dtv for bluray and DVB
Im still using My Sony Wega. KVXG something.. still recon the pic is better than a lot of the LCDs and Plasmas Ive set up
guess that's what happens when all pay tv companies go about things their own way, using their own standards. I'm glad we learned from Australias balls up.
MPEG4 is the way to go, like has been said, your TV will be far from useless, just buy an MPEG4 STB. Hopefully by the time these are available in Australia, the cost would have come down a bit from what we pay here.
Hi Guys.
I was once an Staunch CRT oldschool believer, Running a 34" ES Series Sony, untill recently.
Bought myself A Series 9 Samsung 55" LCD Panel.. it utilises a LED Backlight system instead of common Vacuum Tubes for Backlighting also comes with Built in Mpeg4 Hd Tv Tuner.
Using it on our NZ HD Freeview, it totally Rocks.
Especially when a HD Programme is Running - Programmes like Criminal Minds, CSi etc totally burn your eyes out.
No CRT can perform to that level at all.
I seen your Ozzy Mpeg2 services last year running. While they were relitively clean, Compression Artefacts were still very noticeable.
Mpeg4 will tidy it up greatly..
Cheers:
Mpeg4 doesn't surprise me. Mpeg 2 is just too bulky for efficient transmission, particularly since H.264 uses intraframe compression in addition to individual frame compression and therefore requires less bandwith. If you look at , you can already see some transmissions using this standard. Way back in the days of my "iMac for a TV" most of my downloads from the movie archives were in Mpeg4 at considerable compression compared to Mpeg2 and it was by accident that I discovered that my DVD player actually read Mpeg4 even though there was no mention of it in the manual, probably because it was still experimental at the time. I wouldn't be surprised if many DVD players and some current HDTV enabled sets are also actually compatible (just like my first Pentium computer which supposedly didn't have USB until I looked at the motherboard and there it was!).
UFO
FULL HD - LCD 117cm LCD here, never going back to CRT 68-60cm Sony.
I'd complain if the integrated Set Top Box in my Full HD tv was rendered useless because of Freeview. Unless television manufacturers release free/cheap addons or new firmware upgrades to make up for these inconveniences.
Oh and the latest tv commercial currently airing for digital/freeview says to get freeview you need a HD set top box.
So you can now watch HD one your old Crappy CRT TV?
what about poor old grandma with her ancient CRT tv. I am sure it won't accept HD set top box. I tried one once on my old LG TV using the SD composite output while the picture was there, it was all shaping and totally unwatchable.
