    Default Home network Cabling

Looking at getting some home networking done and was wondering what hardware people use and typical costs associated.

    Current situation
ADSL Modem -> PC via Ethernet

Would like to be able to use in other rooms plus add Xbox and PVR etc
So would need multiple points say up to 8 points in the house. Network should be gigabit.

So was thinking along the following lines
    ADSL Modem -> Router/Switch (WAN connection) -> FIREWALL in Router/Switch -> Lan Connections i.e. PC/Laptop/Xbox/NAS

    Router/Switch needs to have
    • at least 8 ports
    • DHCP so easier to add devices.
    • No Wireless needed.
    • The ability to block any device from accessing the internet. i.e. xbox does not internet access but only lan access.

Any thoughts on Hardware that would do the job?

Hi ocd_csv, I've come to the conclusion that when it comes to home networking, it's easier to just go wireless. I have a wireless modem/router in my house with 6 devices connected to the network. Only one PC and the printer is "physically" connected to the router. Everything else, including the PS2 are connect wirelessly. When the printer dies, I'll probably replace it with one of the new wireless enabled printers.

Honestly, wireless hardware is so cheap now and it much easier than dragging cables through your roof and walls. I will conceed though that it requires a little now setup to secure it.

cabling is easy to do in current home so not a real show stopper.

Provided all devices are WPA/WPA2 enabled I would do this but alas no.

Cable is easier and has no security problems, and faster. I know there are 108m wireless links and better, but try a few time trials, that all fall far short of the best speed

Run cat6 cable if you want 1gb. Cat6 has a few rules you have to follow to pass the 1g standard, and you will need access to a TDR to test it correctly.

    Also look at extras

Just about everything will run on cat5/6 now. Video switches, video extenders, I even saw a HDMI extender from blackbox the other day for Cat5.

Anyway I say copper is faster and easier, but you have to install it.

    Cheers

    wired ftw.....

Cat5E or Cat6 can do GiGE esp ina Home install.

as for actual equipment yeah what ever your ahppy paying for.

ocd_csv what is your location I may be able to point you in the direction of a good data cabler.... as per amca law you need to get it done by a propperly trained and licensed person....

for a 8 point install your looking at anything from $600- $1000 for just the cabling, wall plates and sockets plus a few other items( labour included), then actual hardare can be purchased by you later on to just "plugg" in. an 8 point install should be only a days work for a good tech.
