Toshiba announced today it new crystal technology capable of 10 times the storage capacity of blu-ray.
Using multi-angle interferometry Toshiba claim to be able to store at least 500 giga bytes on a single proprietary crystal.
"This could spell the end of blu-ray before it is established a a market format", says Toshiba GM.
Good thing I have a Toshiba HD DVD Player as well as a Pioneer Blu-ray Player.

What happened to their revolutionary SED technology announced three years ago that was going to kill off both plasma and LCD?
Another April fools joke maybe???

Can't see it there now so has obviously been removed.
The Eagle Flies High!
I might get a petbook for my pooch so he can IM his bitches
I have noticed lately in the catalogs that plasma's are becoming less.
What happens if I press alt + F4?
More news on manufacturing costs would gives us better insight if it is feasible at this stage.
Crystal sounds expensive.
Pretty sure it was just an april fools joke.
on crystals , cool that is real Stargate SG1 stuff
Here is some more info
Or this which appears to be real:
Toshiba always held patents towards many Hd an beyond formats.be it the defunct Hd DVD or Blu-Ray,they had patent on some of the library for some patent for Blu-ray as well.Think back before this last Format war was engaged an lost,an who had patents for signal content an such,an ID.Toshiba had original Patent.but take a stance on HD DVD as simpler to impliment. Now! check the News On Sony with Blu-Ray an Toshiba ,an the history. What do you now see,an the Philips partnerships. Its a saga most of us werent aware of clearly.
Whatever happens,Blu-Ray still seems a bit of a Dead Duck still for now for sales expectations. Its been out for quite a while now,an how many have changed their home library to Blu-ray,an Video hire shops etc., for new release titles an archive titles. Not many if Any.Its all too slow to happen!
Hope it all goes the way it deserves,an I keep my home Library of Dvd for a while longer ,till a real cheap, quick implementation change over HD format comes to pass ,that isnt $$$ crippled to change-over,Crystal or whatever it is?
Yeh this an old thread now!.,but I was thinking on a recent News article from Sony towards Toshiba benefit an their relinquish of some past Paid rights to Toshiba.an now Toshiba is of an running with a new window of opertunity for the next HD formats towards crystal an more!
hi i purchased a toshiba hd dvd player it works fine here its mutiregion works fine on all normal dvds and hd dvds ,merry xmas and a happy new year ,thanks hamguy2 nsw
Its a bit hard to justify the costs of a Blu Player and Disc's when you can buy a 2 channel DVD player for $35 and 2 to 5 movies on a single disc for $2.
Ok, neither player or programs can remotely emulate the quality of a Blu Ray player and disc but many still have the trusty CRT or a bottom end resolution flat screen TV with or without an audio amp but for the average Joe Citizen out there, its good enough for them.
And as DVD's unlike Video tape dont wear out unless badly handled and those who do wreck a DVD are not going to buy a Blu Ray disc that costs 30 to 50 % more than a DVD, to me means that people are going to be slower replacing perfectly workable devices with new technology they really dont have a need for.
Making a claim like the one that started this thread is like printing a form with blanks like,
"We are pleased to Announce we are Currently Developing (INSERT Product) and we believe it will (INSERT a Cross the Fingers Claim) and we propose to release the Production Models (Never Say When) soon.
Surveys (NO DETAILS) carried out (NEVER SAY WHERE) have shown we (WE WHO?) will be able (UNBRIDLED OPTIMISM) of furfilling a gap (?) in the (WHOSE?) Market.
Further Details to Follow.(if you have the Patience of Job).

Blu Ray its days are numbered. Crystal ball........number ....... exactly when no body knows. I still don't think BR is the format of the future, but wait for a media player with HD portable/removable device structure.
iam a bogan
yep i reckon media players all the way they take up so much less storage space than the 200+ dvds ive collected, i think its been about two years since ive watched a dvd....thats just my 2 cents.................
