I built my cab years ago now and used a 21" inch CRT cost a fair bit back then
I have a 21" sony sitting here ready for my machine.
Waiting for the keywiz and joysticks etc to show up so I can start building.
TV's are cheap.
Just curious do your video cards have tv out or are you using an adapter?
My sony CRT is a flat screen monitor.
My video card is a ATI Radeon 3650 HDMI card so it does have svhs out.
I will try it with the monitor and see how it goes.
Now to decide whether to mount it vertical or horizontal....................
I got the keywiz, buttons and joysticks yesterday and should have the control panel wired and running today, then I will do some testing.
Cheers for the replies, will be looking for much the same i think. Probably a 21
'crt.
Cheers
They can be had for nothing by the bucketload if you know the right ppl.
Which way are you going to mount your monitor gavogr?
I am in western victoria sorry mate.
Just dumped a heap of 21's.
I will keep an ear out.
My Brother and i are building two upright's based on Lucids arcade classic,There is no fixed front on them as they have removable speakers in the front so we can use them as Jukebox's aswell. Just deciding which way to go with the controller, ipac or the keywiz?
Cheers
PS if anyone is reading this that lives in Adelaide and has a monitor they want to get rid of Let me know

I am a first time arcade builder too.
The keywiz is very easy to use.
Wire it up and plug it in.
Watch when you wire your joysticks as the switches that you think are the switches are not ( not the r/l u/d opposite thing either.)
Love to see some pics gavogr.
I took some of my Control panel the other day, I will post later.
Arcade with speakers in front for Jukebox function
We are building 2 as you can see, my wife decided to name one of them
Early stage shell of the first one.
Works of art gavogr
Nice Boxes, you'll have to let us know when they are finished so we can drop around for a game of SF
I have a 51cm TV that will go in mine, all I need is the unemployment time to do it (but then I will need the $$$ to do it!)
Coding in C is like sending a 3 year old to do groceries. You gotta tell them exactly what you want or you'll end up with a cupboard full of pop tarts and pancake mix.
Interesting thread , a lot of talk about building genuine looking cabinets with authentic joysticks and buttons but for some reason it all goes off the rails when people suggest using a PC monitor ??
Arcade Games were all 15K CGA , something a PC monitor can't emulate or produce unless you happen to have an old commodore 64 monitor laying around , in which case your limited to about a 14" screen.
Using a PC monitor is going to be everything but authentic , in fact the whole purpose of emulation is to attempt to reproduce the real thing as close to original as possible or you might as well just play MAME sitting at a desk like any other PC game , Building a box around it doesn't make it an arcade machine.
There are real options that don't limit you to the sizes of PC monitors , It is possible to convert any standard TV tube from 13" all the way up to 38" into an fully functional 15K CGA arcade monitor. ( Sony not included )
21" and 29" are the most commonly converted sizes for Mame cabs.
This link explains what to look for and how easy it is.
These are available in Au for $150.
I see your point Joey, the reason I went with a monitor was cost and convenience, plus it is a flat screen which I like the look of better.
It will never be an arcade machine because it has a pc inside it, but to 99% of ppl they are not going to know its not the real deal.
As long as it looks the goods on the outside that's good enough for me, otherwise I would just buy an original(which I may do at some time)
If you want to play any other games you can wind up the res if you want.
