Uploading and distribution of files

I have to ask what is the reason for hosting all attachments via a 3rd party site. I probably already know the answer. It's just that these sites aren't going to have what ever is uploaded indefinitely and people will be asking for the same stuff over and over. Like firmware for the Strongs for example. It gets asked for all the time and it will get to a stage where there will be all these dead megaupload links in posts.
Same goes for pics or diagrams, our favourite satellite applications etc.

I agree with you, Leroy. Megauploads like sites are good only for a short period of time.
But what is the solution, how to avoid legal problems as majority of stuff which get posted one way or the other will be in breach with a law?
I guess at the moment if one of the links get expired we need to contact the person who published it for re-upload, or ask other members who still have the file on their PC.
But pics and diagrams if they are not violating anything should be alowed, after checking by mods if they have enough spare time at hand .
