Default Philips DVD 736K won't open

Just at a mate's place. His DVD player won't open. I've checked all rails - present and correct, although the +3.5V and -3.5V rails read around 20 volts relative to ground but I suspect these are the filament drive voltages for the fluoro display.

When I power it up, the platter spins and the laser does its check but that's about it. There's no front panel display (I am sure there should be) and I'm thinking this is related to the failure to eject.
