    Default Sony RDR HX710 Problems

    Hi,

Any gurus that service sony DVD/HDD units as above?

I have a strange issue. I have had this unit for a few years. I turned it off as I was going away for a while. When I came home, turned everything on, the DVD recorder will NOT play any DVD's except originals (although it seems to have an issue with the odd commercial DVD as well). This means, it wont read any of the DVD-R discs it could read before I went away, and it cant read the DVD-RW disks it made either. Even brand new DVD-R recordings (made on different PC's) it clicks and clunks then states CANNOT READ DISC.

So, my thoughts are the Laser has gone, or getting very week.

Does anyone have a service manual of this, and/or can supply the DVD/Laser component for this unit.

    Thanks for any help,
    Rob

    Thanks Ramjet.

I downloaded the manual and by the specs, my model is the exact one. I always thought the 720 had a bigger HDD, but the manual states it is 160GB, same as mine.

Now, does anyone know where to get Sony parts from? I tried a few, but they are very reluctant to sell "to the public"..

    Thanks again,
    Robert

You need to FINALISE your DVD on the SOny before trying it on another system/PC. It is under the Tools menu (I think).

Did it play in the different DVD players before ???

Are you Finalising them when you have finished recording ???

You need to finalise the disk.

Read the manual, roughly page 39, with the heading:

Playing the disk on other DVD Equipment

    It basically says:
    1) Press TOOLS and select DISC INFO (then press Enter).
    2) Select FINALIZE and press ENTER
    3) Select OK and press ENTER

Make sure the unit is on DVD not HDD. If on HDD, the option wont be available in the menu.
