Can a call be placed directly to the ATA without dialing the voip number? I was thinking since ATA has an IP address, one should be able to call it directly without dialing the voip number and incur a charge when dialing a different provider.

Hi,
yes, I do this all the time as it is free to wherever you call and the quality is super. Both parties need to open ports for sip and redirect to LAN IP of their unit in the router. The number you call is username@iport
username: is the username which is written in the unit you try to connect to
ip: is a wan address of the unit you try to call (unles it is in your LAN)
port: you need to specify if it is different than 80 (80, sip default port)
Both parties should to open and redirect UDP ports range to their unit in the router as well.
Good luck

If you use a Pap2 you can setup a speed dial so you press 2# and it will dial the other party , we use this all the time a good intercom
we run draytek routers that have direct ip dialing built in
