you need to convert to mp4 format first.

A program like Jodix Free iPod Video Converter will assist you immensely

If you have a look around there are also converters that will convert a DVD to ipod. I've used my ipod for movies (NHL highlights from Youtube work well), but I wouldn't recommend it for anything too long or too detailed.
