    Smile Re-point Austar dish

Hi, I'm new to this satellite world and have been doing a lot of research. I've found this forum very educational and I'm starting to understand some of the concepts.

What I would like to do as my first satellite experiment is give the STB back to Aus* and use a Dreamax 480 STB (brand new given to me as a gift) and a SelecTV smart card. My questions are:

    1. Is the dish and LNB compatible ?
    2. Can I simply point the dish at 166.0E Intelsat 8 ?
    3. Do I just use a compass to do this ?
    4. How do I set the elevation to 47.2°
    5. What’s the Azimuth Angle mean ?
    6. LNB Skew 22.9 ? What does this actually mean ?

I got these numbers from DishPointer.com. and if some one could verify if I have the correct settings my location is Latitude: -33.5486° Longitude: 149.7369° The only thing I know is correct because spatial information is what I do.

    Cheers

    Warnie

    G'Day Cobber,
Nothing to stop you using the dish and LNB.
You really don't need a compass in this situation.
    The things to note,
The Local oscillator frequency of the LNB. You'll need to enter that in new box.
Mark on the pole and bracket the current position for C1.
Azimuth is the direction from W to E through North.
True North is our reference point.
If you use that pointing program, you should be able to see the line for C1 and then PAS8.

    Address: -33.5486, 149.7369
    Latitude: -33.5486°
    Longitude: 149.7369°
    Satellite: 156.0E Optus C1
    Elevation: 50.4°
    Azimuth (true): 11.3°
    Azimuth (magn.): -0.9°

    Address: -33.5486, 149.7369
    Latitude: -33.5486°
    Longitude: 149.7369°
    Satellite: 166.0E Intelsat 8
    Elevation: 47.2°
    Azimuth (true): 27.8°
    Azimuth (magn.): 15.7°

You would need to go 16.5 Degrees to the E and Down 3 Degrees.
Your Down lead, looking into the dish probably at 7 O'clock, needs to be about 5 O'clock for PAS8. Anyway tweak for Maximum signal and quality.

The Bracket on the pole should have a scale either side, Elevation and Latitude. Set it on either.
A handy tip is to put a clamp on the mast to stop it slipping down when you loosen it to change Azimuth.
Now, about Select, they seem to have recently changed their policy about supplying cards for DIY installs. Perhaps if you lean on them, they may relent.
Kindest Regards, " The Druid "......

What's the change? First I've heard of it, as I'm still being supplied with cards with no problems, although I am registered with selectv as a dealer/installer.

I have noted that any reference to DIY has been removed from their site and I'm sure others have reported they cannot get cards.
I'd be happy to report otherwise, as I think they are only cutting their own throat. As with their subscription increases.
I checked this out about two weeks ago, maybe they have relented.

Interesting... I better stock up on selectv smartcards, just in case.

Seems to be a contradiction here... they say smartcard-only orders can be made

But when you go to the order quote/sign up page, the smartcard option isn't there.

I'll make some enquiries on this.
