Yep, hard drives. Look for the big old 5.25inch RLL or MFM drives.

But even the standard 3.5's have some good little monsters in them.
Don't let any skin get between two of them. They're strong.
You can also find very strong rare earth magnets on the net and ebay.

I'm not doing anything illegal what so ever. I'd just like to play around with magnets that actually WORK, not crappy ones that do nothing.

people use them to slow down their electricity meter if it is an old type (digital ones are too clever for magnets)
Some folks use them to screw with credit cards. Another dodgy use is to use them to unlock doors & bypass electronicsystems, and to erase data.
    So i am told.

the ones on X Band radar magnetrons are strong, but the HDD magnets still win hands down.

Why not just look at this page. The source of the other thread.

Watch your fingers with those bloody hard drive magnets.
The are NOT very forgiving, I know this from experience, resulting in blood.

Our Gov will soon think up something if somebody accidently tells them: "oooh.. magnets are dangerous, they can bite".

Yes.. I made the mistake one day of putting all my nice strong magnets on the table lined up so I could test and compare them.

Unfortunately, I dropped one and it raced towards the nearest magnet on the table. The momentum it picked up made both of them race even faster towards the next and so on. Before I could blink, the whole mass flew off the end of the table and hit the wall and put a dent in the gyprock.
Home made magnetic rail gun ! I thought this was a cool idea and checked the net to see if anybody else had done it before. Yep, not original ... there were bigger idiots out there already accelerating stuff faster than I'd ever dreamed of !

If somebody had been standing at the end of my bench they could have been seriously hurt. I can imagine what can be achieved when you're deliberately trying to do it.

    Hmmm, the rail gun.
We made one at school with a "talking electronics" pc we built (cant remember what it was called)
I always had ambitions to make a real BIG one.
