You had better tell us what you want to do with the GPS. Do you want it for trekking, motoring, finding something, mapping or what. There are few that do everything but some come close.
I bought a "cheapie" Roadangel , but it works OK for me. You pay more for a bigger screen, more features like music playback and stuff.
If you can wait till easter they might put them on special again like last time when they were about $300 plus some free petrol and a few other things.
TomTom , They arent real cheap thou, unless you have a N Series nokia phone, then you can d/load software and key run on phone and just purchase a
Nokia Bluetooth Wireless GPS Module LD-3W - $90
And your in buisness
He would be better off with a PDA with inbuilt GPS chip , as they run Windows Mobile , he can then " test " all the software until he decides whats best for him.
If he doesnt , he will end up spending money on something that may be useless especially in a rural area. Something like an Asus A636 would be perfect as I am sure members can assist in supplying some software for him to " try b4 buy "
thanks for the replies,
i will get him to look into it further.
Visit the 'Cheap GPS Lost Thread'.
With a bit of effort a 'Chinese' PNA will give you all the GPS softwares and up to date maps.
A PNA is much cheaper and lighter than a PDA. Get a Win Ce 5.0 model to ensure it runs TomTom.
The Deal Extreme (DX) models appear well made and reliable (US $149 delivered).
The Deal Extreme units are good, as diavalo13666 said.
You can try all the nav software and pick out which one you like best.
Also delivery from Deal Extreme is quick I got mine in 9 days from placement of order
ok which 1 does he get ?
which 1 has these ?
* non-glare screen (essential)
* WinCE 5.0 (essential for Tom Tom)
* Good battery life (for walk'in 'bout)
* 400MHz processor
* TMC ready
* a 12 months warranty
* and maybe an FM transmitter (to listen to it via the 'sound system')
cheers.
can u get an sd card gor the $149 one ?
go the 169 mango
i cant vouch for other brands, but i can vouch for garmins city navigator, it has all rural town streets listed. i have an etrex legend that i use out bush but also in the car for street nav, but the purpose built on dash variety would better suit your sons need with a bigger display and easy to use touch screen. retailing for around $400 i would buy that before the chinese version for him, the chinese version is great if you like to fiddle and experiment, but to rely on for business i'd buy a name brand that comes with warranty and support if needed, also local repair / replacement if it fails.
im not knocking the one at dealsxtreme, i just think the garmin would better suit this persons need.
Good old Harvey Norman has a GPS called Navig8r with the latest Australian Mapping by NAVTEQ ? for $188 according to their current catalog.
I found this using google, i think this is the right link for the unit

That's a great price for a big retailer.
Unfortunately Smart2Go navigation is simply the pits. And Navteq maps are simply not as good in the urban environment as Sensis maps.
Also looks like the mount is a 'plastic covered wire stalk'. Not so flash.
It's certainly hackable. It recognises usoft activesync. It's driven by either an ARM920T 400MHz as shown in the graphics or the Atlas as shown in the specs, with 64mb ram. Seems it's a Win Ce 5.0 OS.
