Default 40GB PS3 not spinning discs

So i have a friend whos PS3 stopped reading discs. The disc comes out about half an inch more or less from when it was inserted if it even moves at all. The bubble at the top still comes up like it is trying to load it but it shows nothing.

I was wondering if this is a motor or a lens issue and if its is easily replaceable. He offered to give it to me for $10, so i figured if i can fix it cheaply myself than thats a bargain.

I did some research and was pointed to a KES-400A, but i have no clue as to what that is or how to replace something like that (Noob, i know).

Any thing you guys can do to help or suggest would be much appreciated.

    whats your location?

Someone on here can most likely help you with it.

    it could also be the

blue ray controller IC - BD7956FS

it will have the same symptoms you describe.

Its cheaper to replace the IC rather than the whole unit.

Out of the handful of PS3 I have done it has always been the laser tried all the other things like bios upgrades but always the laser I found mine on ebay for about $80 if i remember right, but they are way more expensive now as there is a shortage of them or something and as to replacing the laser was way easy. There were a few vids on u-tube

True, but i have an 80 and a 60 gig already, so its not as though i need it, just figured if i can fix it for cheap it would be worth it.

Yes KES400AAA is the optics & I agree its most likely that is faulty. Set u back at least $150aus these days for a good 1 or send it to $sony for around $320

That is the most common laser within the ps3 but it could also be a KES410ACA but have not seen one in a ps3 yet.

Question to the installers/repairers....do you recieve any warranty on the PS3 lasers from your supplier(other than DOA).If so, how long?

i inquired about getting some a while back, but warranty was DOA only from the factory. That's most likely why the the suppliers in Aus only provide DOA as well. Cant blame them

Have you had many go a miss?

Ye a few...after like 1-2 weeks, thats why my supplier(& his i guess) went from 6 months warranty to DOA....I even used to replace the driver IC as the thought was that was killing perfectly good lasers...but they still popped
Ahh $ony...crappy lasers from PSX days!
