Do you mean sell it here ? If so , no you dont need to add any hardware.
Just wanting to find out if I need to sell any hardware (M/B HDD etc) if I want to sell off a used copy of windows XP Media Center Edition. If so, what hardware at minimum is required? Just an original HDD?
Thanks

So, it will still be able to activate even if it is on a completely different system?
what is it that you wanna do exactly mate?
do you wanna sell it?
install it on another computer along with the current one installed on?
or just install it on another computer and take off the current one?
az87kw,think if you have activated this Windows XP Media centre OS ,several hardware parameters are logged against this copy of the OS.if its reinstalled on something other, under the same cd serial number ,It will not fully install?at last progress in installation will ask to have a Net. connection an you cant click "Ignore" an finish!
If you do connect to net. will confirm that this has previously been activated an reg. an several ,or many hardware changes have taken place. And then again Not fully install! else give you a trial period ,with request to contact MS an purchase a new CD Key.
Sometimes reinstall on the same Motherboard is sufficient ,an acknowledges, some hardware changes have taken place?an a full reinstall is completed an all ok!
So if you resell this OS,this is what you may encounter? an the Motherboard sold as well, even the HDD.may be required.not totally sure? think was only a few basic, like Graphic, ram,an optical device, allowed for reinstall, even with the same HDD,an motherboard ? was quite a number of years ago now ,I had to deal with these issues.
Think you may know this? as per your Question.as what to sell with it!
Copy of XP Home edition were prolific for this issue as well.
But we all use vista or something now anyway? with different issues?
cheers! hope this help you somewhat?
I'm breaking up a computer (media center) to sell off the components and I know that oem copies are registered to the system components, I just need to know what components are the minimum required to sell with the operating system to allow it to be reactivated on a new computer. Will m/b or m/b + HDD be enough?
you don't need to sell anything with it, when you try to activate it on another computer it might not activate online though, you have to use the phone service and it will be activated this way.
mb and hdd and it should be ok
Vote 2 for this one, I use MCE2005 here and had a wifi card pick up a lightning strike, as a result of the mainboard and processor change I had to re-activate it. I got on the phone and really had to argue with some person at a call center about it but the give me a re-activation code. They have since eased up on the requirements a lot.
I have found that each OEM version can be installed 3 times in total on completely different machines before you have to call MS for assistance.
OEM can't be resold, its apart of the agreement, but 3 hardware parts like cpu, mainboard and video will keep it happy as its the basis of the computer anyhow.
OEM copies only locked to the mobo not anything else. i have a pc with XP OEM, the only thing original on it is the mobo/cpu and it never has problems activating
