Can you logon as administrator with no password ?
I upgraded from XP home to XP Pro and only ADMINISTRATOR appears as
the only account/logon choice. I can see the three other users on my hard drive with explorer but I can't drag/drop the contents into the new XP! If I try to expand the Owner folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Owner, I get a pop up box that says .
. . . "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner is not accessable Access is denied"
So how can I recover the "Owners" doc's, (as well as the two other user
accounts docs) when I don't have access to that user at logon to enter a
password? The password is known but there is only one user at logon,
ADMINISTRATOR!
Basically I would like to add the three other users back to account choices at
logon, or at least drag and drop saved docs/pics/videos/mp3z from those
users!
thanks chris
P.S. I also tried to install this "C:" drive as a "D:" slave in another computer
hoping to xfer files that way, and the same result as above "Access is Denied"

Get a copy of BartPE boot disk and you will be able to get into all your folders
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

or use ERD Commander, go to locksmith and change the password to what you want. once in you can remove user logings ?? if you want.

1) Yes I can logon as "Administrator". when upgrading to XP Pro from XP Home I did not set a Admin PW!
2) Where can I get BartPE or just google it?
3) I know the passwords I just can't access indiviual accounts (See below)
Remember though, this isn't a "FORGOT PASSWORD" situation. I know what the passwords are, I'm just not offered the oppurtunity to logon with the passwords at boot up!
The three (prior to upgarde) account names do NOT appear at logon.
JUST the "Admininstrator" appears as the only account which doesnt have a password! But indeed the other accounts are there, as you can see them from explorer under C:\Documents and Settings along with "All users" and "Default user".
They were NOT deleted or formatted over in the upgrade to XP pro!
easy.....
at the log on screen where you see the log in to "Administrator"
Do the following...
Ctrl+Alt+Del a few times in a row.
A box comes up and you can type in user/pass.

I will give you this program, install it and then I'll run down with it how to access all documents for all users, it's all a matter of security.
here you go install it first.
then right click the document you are trying to open and scroll down to properties, you will then see a tab saying security(XPFSE) chose that one and then in there give your self full permission to access the file.

Aboulaly ok thanks will try the proggie !
Aboulaly thanks mate might leave this one on the USB stick for little emergencies

Have had the same problem, i'm pretty sure I just took ownership of the folders to get access to the files.
There is also a cool linux live cd called knoppix, that has no problem accessing protected windows files, loads live from the cd into memory and does not touch the hdd, then just transfer to a usb stick.
Thanks aboulaly I tried that and NFG . . . still gets "Access Denied"
I tried 4-5 different GUARANTEED FIXES and none worked with the exception of the linux cd boot disk which I didn't try.
Most likely If I loaded the linux cd boot disk I would have gotten "PENGUIN" bit again and dumped all my MS OS machines. I loaded Linux Mandrake about 8 years ago and loved it and going BACK (as in reverse) killed me. Don't think I coild do that again . . .
Anyhow took the easy way out and reformatted the whole drive. I know I lost the users and their data/docs but I believe there were other issues that reformatting solved.
Thanks for all the input . . . and it kills me to let this get the best of me, but the owner finally didn't care about whatever they had in those folders/accounts they just needed the machine back!
I am sure you didn't use it correctly.
I gave it a whirl last night and it worked very well Thanks again Aboulaly

Yeah but that was an install disk you used to install Mandrake. Knoppix is a live CD which doesnt actually touch the hard drive, it loads into memory. Once the cd is removed it will boot back to windows.
Anyway, there is still an easy way to get your data back, its a prog called Get Data Back for NTFS. It will recover almost anything, even from formatted disks, have used it many times with amazment. Must be a registered version to recover files, many cracks available or full version torrents.
I have found going into options and checking recover lost files, recover deleted files, and excessive search. takes couple of hours but works like a charm.
One finished, do a refined search for the user names of the folders lost in the last windows install, You will be amazed what formatted files it will come up with.
Worth a try anyway.
